Vince - VNC client for Roku OS (GPLv3+)

Vince is a basic view-only VNC client for Roku. It supports storing several connections and selecting them from a menu.

  • Color depths of 8 or 24 bpp are supported
  • VNC password authentication
  • One connection can be selected as a screensaver. If the system screensaver is set to the Vince channel, that connection will be opened when the screensaver starts.

Installing

Navigate to https://my.roku.com/add/Vince in your browser, and log in using the Roku account associated with your device(s). Follow the directions, and Vince should appear on your homescreen.

Usage

The menus are hopefully intuitive. When you have a connection open, press the "OK" button on your remote to toggle zooming the screen. While zoomed, use the arrow buttons to pan around. Press "OK" again to zoom out. Press "back" or "left" to exit the connection.

Building

Currently the build relies on a Roku-provided Makefile with no explicit license. See the comment at the bottom of Makefile for the URL to that file, download it, and run make to build the zip, then sideload it.

Rendering speed

  • Try supporting rect encodings
  • Optimize blitting in canvas drawBmp - do incremental math, maybe unroll the loop

Patreon weirdness

Clicking on your Patreon link just brings up "This patron isn’t supporting any creators at the moment." and I don't see a way to support you...

Not appearing on home screen

The add channel on the roku site loads for a second then doesnt seem to do anything. the app never shows up on the home screen.

Trying to build it myself gives me this:

UI issues

  • Format "optional" on the password menu item - maybe italic, grey, on another line
  • Add Connection -> Connect/Delete don't make much sense. Maybe New Connection -> Connect for a temporary connection
  • Give some feedback on Save
  • Connect should validate connection details, like Save does
  • On Delete, close the panel and return to connection list
  • Manual or automatic (MRU?) reordering of connection list
  • When user backs out of connection, restore the connection list state (panel layout, unsaved edits)
  • After edit, move focus to the left
  • Show docs/tips (e.g. "press OK to zoom") somewhere
  • Test 1080 UI resolution

Precompiled build

My pc stopped working a few days ago, still waiting for repair , may i have a precompiled build? and i cant add the channel via my.roku since i dont want to factory reset my tv.

Screensaver mode

Allow one connection to be marked as the screensaver. When the system screensaver is set to this channel, activating the screensaver opens the connection.

Rendering issues

  • Might need to pad bmp file scanlines to multiples of 4
  • Ghost cursor when moving it quickly on a 8bpp screen that hasn't repainted
  • Flatten and repaint the canvas every 5 seconds or so, in case there is a corruption we can't detect
