Apparition can open kpat as over-sized inert full-screen window about burn-my-windows HOT 6 CLOSED

That was educational, Simon! Linux has become so cosy this century that I haven't compiled a single line of code since I started writing about the operating system in the mid-90s. So this Ubuntu 23.04 I'm running here isn't a compile environment and I had to install gettext and libglib2.0-dev-bin for the make install to work. But it did compile and install and the #356 fix works, tested through all the four modes in my diagram. So thanks for some excellent swift recoding, Simon. With extra points for deciphering my baroque bug report! I'm going to go back to Wayland, but I can see there are still reasons folks might want to stick with xorg a little longer. A minor point, do we know why Kpat aways opens with Apparition *windowed* in xorg but in Wayland the Apparition open depends on the state of the previous close (which I assume is the designed behaviour)? Is this your fix at work, avoiding any attempt to open full screen? If so, I'd say it was an entirely acceptable workaround for folks clinging to xorg. Thanks again. It's great to have restored that zany Apparition opening for my windows. I was missing it.

Simon, I've certainly beaten your record for a late reply. So very sorry—I seem to have missed this altogether. Having reported the issue to Github, I stopped using Apparition for launching windows and encountered no problems with any of the other effects. Later I switched to Wayland but neglected to reinstate Apparition. Your email today jogged my memory and accordingly I've gone back over this. My first test was to switch Apparition back on. So now with *Ubuntu 23.04 and Apparition, using Wayland:* Result 1: KPat opens full screen, correctly sized full screen and fully functional (CSFF). *Same OS and Apparition using xorg*: Result 2: KPat opens with an oversized, non-functional (OSNF) window exactly as previously reported. Following this it's necessary to crash out from KPat (using pulldown Quit from the top panel) Result 3 (All subsequent attempts for this session) KPat opens with a small, functional (SFW) window that can be sized to fit the screen. Following a reboot of the operating system, back into xorg I get a repeat of Result 2's OSNF. This is a rather curious finding. I can only speculate that #335 is still lurking under xorg. Here are some further tests I've carried out with Apparition under xorg. Following a fresh boot. Open KPat →OSNF Crash out from KPat Reopen KPat → SFW Rinse and repeat. All's well. If on one of these subsequent SFW reopens I crash out with top panel pulldown, subsequent reopens are SWF again. Unless… I have opened the SWF to full screen. The full screen is fully functional but in this case a crash out results in a subsequent OSNF. In summary, if I crash out of KPat SFW the reopen is SFW. If I crash out of KPat CSFF the reopen will be OSNF. This is all reliably repeatable. For the attached table, Full Screen No means that KPat was SFW; Crash Out No means that the regular KPat Menu/Game/Quit was used; Next Open OK? No means OSNF. It seems that with xorg, by default KPat likes to open SWF unless it was full screen when previously closed or crashed. And that attempts to open full screen with xorg and Apparition always result in OSNF. I hope this is helpful.
