in the technical sense of this plugin, usernames = display names and login names = what you used to register on the forum. to me, this is confusing and could be misleading. I think the technical back end code is fine with this, but the front end should be changed some.

for example:
the group permission under users and permissions should be changed from

Can change username? to Can change display name?

in the user cp under Your Profile, the text should be changed from

Change username to Change display name

This issue was generated by todo based on a TODO comment in a04f844. It's been assigned to @undefined because they committed the code.

I think currently when this plugin is installed, in copies the login name over to the username, which is what the 'display name' is. there should be some additional plugin settings added, maybe something like this:

• how many times can a user change their display name
• allow the user to pick if they want to show their registration user name vs their display name
• allow users to sign in with their registration username or their display name

just as we prevent users from using the same usernames, we should also prevent them from using the same display names as well.
