About

QuickTag for iTunes was developed to solve a problem frequently encoutered by DJ's trying to organize large music collections. Although originally intended for DJ's, QuickTag can be used for anyone with a large music collection wanting to better sort their music.

QuickTag runs along side iTunes. It allows you to configure a list of custom track genres, categories, and attributes. When a track is played in iTunes, it's display in QuickTag, and you can quickly tick off the new genre, a rating, a category and any number of your configured attributes.

After clicking "Apply", the tracks ID3 genre tag is updated with the new genre, and all of the additional fields are written to the ID3 comments field. The tags are written in such a way that you can then utilize iTunes smart-playlist feature to search for, sort and organize your tracks however you like.

System Requirements

QuickTag requires a Macintosh with iTunes in order to run. Other operating systems are not supported.

Building

QuickTag is written in AppleScriptObjC using OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) and XCode 5. Simply download the source, open the XCode project file, and build and run the application.

Add keyboard shortcuts

The user interface should support keyboard shortcuts.

iTunes jog/play controls

It would be nice to have the ability to click a button in QuickTag to play the next/previous track/play/pause, so the user doesn't need to return to iTunes to do so.

For attributes and categories, the + button should auto-disable.

Attributes are limited to 18, and categories are limited to 8 in the application.

Currently a warning dialog is displayed if the user adds more than these number of values. It might be better to have the + button greyed out, and display a warning near the table rather than pop-up a dialog, and allowing the user to create may extra items that can't be displayed.

update for Apple Music new library (2019)

Hi,
Is there any chance to have an updated version of quicktag using the new iTunes become Music library ?
I'd love to continue using Quicktag to organize my library.

Partial matches causing existing tag values to populate incorrectly

Need a more "exact" search for existing genre/category/attribute and populating the interface from existing tag values.

For example, "Tech House" is matching with "House", which is incorrect.

Add single option for disabling delimiters

A check box in preferences should be added to allow a user to just disable all the tag delimiters with one click, should they choose not to use them.

Add option for opening iTunes

The behavior for opening iTunes when QuickTag starts should be configurable via an option.

Add option for tag seperator

Add a user option to allow the separator for the tags to be specifiable.

Overwrite comment option

Need to provide an option to allow the user to select whether to overwrite comments in the track, or just append them.

Add initial playlist option

Provide an option for the user to select a default playlist to start working with when opening QuickTag.

This would allow them to easily start working on say a "New Music" playlist, and not need to select it in iTunes first.

Shared user defaults are not always written in a timely manner

The shared user defaults need to be fixed such that they update immediately when a user changes a value.

Allow tagline to be customizeable

The tag line, added to every track tagged with the application, should be customizable.

QuickTag does not resize properly for lower screen resolutions

QuickTag should be updated to support smaller resolutions, displaying either scrollbars or resizing to be smaller.

Provide option for tag destination

Allow the user to specify where they would like to write the final track tags, comments, grouping, genre?

Attribute names are cut off

With long attribute names, the names in the third column are being truncated.

Order of tag values could be configurable

It may be nice to allow the user to reorder "rating/categories/attributes" in the final tags, into an order they prefer.

Need product help

Product help needs to be completed for QuickTags integrated help.

Use genre field for category and attributes.

Just saw your software on digitaltechtools and it seems to have lots of potential.

A lot of dj's only use the genre tag for multiple genre's. A option to use only that field would be great. And an option to create as many "attributes/categories" as you like would be great to.

I would like to help but I don't make software. If you need a small website for Quicktag on a github page I would be happy to make that :)
