Oh, wait, it's even weirder than that. Putting an unimplemented!() at the beginning of uefi_start results in a message being printed in spite of logging being uninitialized at that stage. Replacing the whole body of uefi_start with unimplemented!() results in the build failings with errors about missing panic_handler and friends.
Good explanation is probably still that stuff is being optimized out, but the effects of UB are still quite a sight to behold ^^'

Commit 2576556 added a hlt in the panic_handler's loop, using asm!("volatile"), and it seems the function will not be optimized out anymore. Could you check if this is still an issue?
