Metrics dashboards in CloudWatch

Problem

Having to hunt for valuable metrics in multiple spaces (Cloudfront, WAF, S3, etc) is not enjoyable and requires a lot of context switching. As an owner and administrator, I would like a single pane of glass that collates the metrics I care about for this website.

Proposed Solution

Identify important metrics for this deployment, ensure that the metrics are shipped to CloudWatch, and create a dashboard to monitor these metrics over a ~6 month timeframe.

Implement tags on all resources

Problem

Tagging resources is an important step towards being able to reliably query for and forecast budgets for cloud resources. We are currently not tagging resources in a way to allows us to compartmentalize and report on usage over time.

Proposed Solution

Create a map of default tag keys and values to apply when Terraform creates resources in this repository

Deployment Workflow is Linked to Infrastructure Workflow

Problem

Making Terraform changes shouldn't require a rebuild and redeploy of the website. This wastes compute time (and money), unnecessarily invalidates the cache in CloudFront, may reduce MTTR in the event of a disaster, and reduces iteration speed.

Proposed Solution

Modify the GitHub Actions workflows to monitor changes to Terraform or content paths/files and only execute the workflow required when affected files are changed. This will probably not be trivial, and it may make sense to move the IAC code out into the Infrastructure repo.
