ctrl+z isnt the kill command, thats the stop command, it hard-freezes the program without closing it
it may behave better if you use ctrl+c, but i don't have a camera to test on

Yes, Ctrl-C should be the one you use - as stated above, Ctrl-Z doesn't actually kill the program, it just puts it to the background.
