Also root privileges needed in "help" case.
I think that apps in this case may work correctly without root privileges:
ffamax@raspberrypi ~/images $ raspistill
- failed to open vchiq instance

I've got everything updated on mine and it's still wonky, but it looks like all the help text is in the verbose output.
Something like raspivid -? -v -t 0 will get you the help message, and then it'll exit.
