Personal Scraper

This is a starter kit for the Personal Scraper in the Web Scraper Workshop.

Set Up

  • Go to this link
  • Click "Fork" in the top right corner. This will create a copy of the project, but in your GitHub account.
  • In GitHub Desktop, click "Current Repository" in the top left. The click the small "Add" dropdown. Select "Clone repository..."
  • A list of all your repositories attached to your GitHub account will appear. Click on "personal-scraper", then click the blue "Clone" button. This will create a copy of that project on your computer.
  • In GitHub Desktop, you'll see personal-scraper in a list on the left. Double-click it to enter the project.
  • Select "Repositories", the select "Open in Atom".
  • Open a new command prompt by starting to type in "command prompt" into the bottom left search bar of your screen, then press "enter".
  • Type cd Documents/GitHub/personal-scraper. Press enter.
  • Type npm install. Press enter.
  • Type node server.js. Press enter.
  • You should see something like this in your command prompt:
  app running on 3000
  • Open a new tab in the browser. Go to http://localhost:3000/. You should see a very small "This is my personal web scraper!" in the top left corner of the screen. It may take some time to load. You are ready to go!
  • Keep your command prompt open at all times!
