Quran.com Join Quran.com community

This project is the frontend for Quran.com. It is built using Reactjs + Redux + Expressjs + Webpack. It is isomorphic (javascript shared between both the server and the client) for SEO reasons.

How to contribute

We trust that you will not copy this idea/project, this is at the end for the sake of Allah and we all have good intentions while working with this project. But we must stress that copying the code/project is unacceptable.

Read the contributing section before creating an issue.

Running the app locally

Ensure you have nodejs installed
Get the source by running git clone https://github.com/quran/quran.com-frontend/ or creating a fork
Run npm install to do first time installation of all dependencies
Run npm run dev to start the dev server. Make sure you have pm2 installed globally! npm install -g pm2
Open http://localhost:8000 in your browser to see the app.

Staging

To see the app with the latest changes, see the staging site. Production releases are made periodically when staging is stable and well tested.

Backend

The API source is at https://github.com/quran/quran-api-rails

DB is private, message @mmahalwy for access.

The dev server uses the staging API by default. If you want to use a local API server, follow the instructions in the API repo and run the server locally then update the API_URL field in app.json to point to the local address.

Remove 'see also', 'notes and references', and 'external links' from the introduction to the Surah (if you wish to keep the Wikipedia source or merge the sources).

Weird hover line break with tooltip

Russian translation 39:28

I found a incorrect spelling in verse 39:28 of Russian translation. It reads :

Мы ниспослали Коран, в котором нем кривды, на арабском языке, чтобы они устрашились.

It has to read:

Мы ниспослали Коран, в котором нет кривды, на арабском языке, чтобы они устрашились.

Russian word 'нет' means negative in this context it means Quran is without any deviance. And right now your translation reads 'в котором нем кривды' which is incorrect.

Audio skipping bug

Audio skipping bug (due to memory). When the user changes the played ayah in the middle the ayah is skipped to the point it was at before. Example: the user starts playing Surah Fatihah, in the middle of the second ayah the user clicks ayah one. Then when the audio starts ayah two it goes directly to the middle of the ayah, and continues playing.

Use https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ and https://varvy.com/tools/ and https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/module/ to improve quran.com.

Firefox bugs

what to call them but things like the JEEM that acts as a pause.

Also the Arabic script just scrolls out of view instead of piling up as multiple lines in the same window.

The strange thing is that it just started to happen out of the blue towards the end of last week (same laptop and browser).

Indeed on another laptop I have the alpha Quran site does not load or scroll down either so I don’t know if it is dependent on different operating systems….?

The Surah list is still clickable when hidden.

Bangla translation 5:92

I have seen in the bangla translation in Sura maidah (5) verse 92 is 'তোমরা আল্লাহর অনুগত হও, রসূলের অনুগত হও এবং আত্মরক্ষা কর। কিন্তু যদি তোমরা বিমুখ হও, তবে জেনে রাখ, আমার রসূলের দায়িত্ব প্রকাশ্য প্রচার বৈধ নয়।' which is totally opposite meaning, it should be "বৈ নয়" instead of "বৈধ নয়" please correct it. Such type of mistake is totally misguide the people.

Provide word details from corpus.quran.com

I really like how the word definition is shown on mouseover (or tap).

What I was wondering was if a corpus.quran.com like detailed popup come with the details of the word, even if it requires one or two extra clicks? Even my friends think that would be really really cool.

When I finished listening to Surah Ar-Rahman to the end, the webpage went to the first ayah and the URL changed to alpha.quran.com/55/79-89. (The Surah only has 78 Ayaat, and the scroll up should be removed. This does not happen with Surah Fatihah.)

I just played Surah Al-Nur with recitation of Sheikh Mishrey AlAfsay, but the first ayah was not from Surah Al-Nur.. please check

Every time I play a surah, the sheikh will after a certain number of verses.

Please use the German translation of Bubenheim & Eliyas

Typing '43' into the search bar on the home page. Apparently 43 is written in the fonts. (A person should be able to type the number of the Surah into the search bar.)

Follow Arabic audio by auto-scrolling the page.

The reciter "Mishari Rashid al-`Afasy" is always highlighted in the reciters list, even when the audio is playing of a different reciter.

Put transliteration in its own section, not under English.

The word-by-word translation does not work in reading mode.

Organize languages in dropdown by alphabet order

Use Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi's Tafhim al-Qur'an (englishtafsir.com) as the introduction to all of the Surahs and use this website (http://www.alim.org/library/quran/ayah/theme/1) for the theme portion of the introduction.

Surahs 78, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 96, 100, 101 shows the text "Loading..." at the end of the surah, even when the whole Surah is being displayed. (Not all Surahs have been checked.)

Description of website could be lengthened.

Have different subdomains, where each one would open up the website in that language or the translation would be of that language.

It could also flip the website and make the text go from right to left to make it seem more natural for languages that are written that way, for example Urdu. Or cookies could be kept to tell the preferred language of the user.

Surah Fatihah in the standard Qur'an does not include the bismillah (I believe). Also, it would be good if every Surah began with the bismillah and its translation centered on the screen above the first ayah.

Decrease the number of fonts or put them somewhere else!

When in reading mode and you reach the end of a Surah the last line is written on the left side instead of the right.

There must be a way to listen for highlight or clipboard and provide the actual arabic text for the copied. I have to look into it but i have an idea of how. We just need to get off our clipboard!

If the play button beside ayah is pressed the recitation continues. There should be a way to play the ayah alone and another button to continue recitation from and including that ayah.

Include reciter "Saad Al-Ghamdi" in the list of reciters.

Turn off word-by-word translation when no English translation is selected, and another language is selected because the word-by-word is only in English.

Show scroll bar for main page and surah nav

When a person types into the search bar above the list of Surahs the list should automatically shrink to show the Surahs that begin with those letter(s).

Adding " /" to the end of http://alpha.quran.com/donations, http://alpha.quran.com/contact or http://alpha.quran.com/about causes the Al-Qur'an Al-Kareem image to not load.

My desktop computer on Chrome cannot load the Japanese translation.

[Suggestion] Better UX with "sura info"

When clicking the "info" button. Open the info box, in an overlay that can be easily closed again. Problem in the user interface occours when having scrolled down in a surah, clicking the button, then suddenly the entire page just goes 2≈ aya (according to what resolution you got), and I have to scroll "all the way" up to read it.
Would be better if it just appeared, and could easily be hidden when needed
