Did not see a way to change the pool name, so to something other than TANK
Used the following ISO http://pkg.project-trident.org/iso/release/Trident-x64-20180831.iso which booted fine. Setup VM with 4GB memory, and 50GB of space. After booting I get missing boot loader as shown in the screenshot below.
Verify that an install to a full, single disk works properly
Sorry,first I opened this issue on the Trident-core section:
In the final System Installation Summary step of the installer, the root and user account passwords are shown in plain text.
Should be masked or otherwise hidden somehow.
If I write the new Trident-x64-TOS-19.07-20190710 installer .iso for an DVD than the installer can't find my HDD and my SSD, when I have to choose the target drives (after the time zone and hostname) or the target partitions of the new system the list is empty. This error already was earlier and solved.
Now if I open a terminal (from the installer) to partitioning and I'm exiting from this terminal than the "Installation is ready - Reboot or Live CD" blue screen come up again.
If I write the installer .iso for an USB key with dd command (block size 1M) than I can choose the target drives and I can make a fresh install, but in the newly installed system all the keyboard layout are empty,I can use my keyboard only with the default US layout.
Interesting the two different behavior of the intaller .iso (in the case of DVD or USB key) maybe the block size can cause this, I will try to write with different block sizes.
The logic for the fix from this issue:
https://github.com/project-trident/trident-core/issues/28
needs to be applied to the start-trident-installer script.
On my hardware RC3 attempts to use the vesa driver with the nVidia VGA.

Hello!
I got these error messages under the boot process of the installer media (.iso)
unknown oid "debug.witness.trace" therefore the sysctl failed to start
other error message:
devd line 29:device:syntax error
And when I have to choose the place for the new system, the field of "Select Installaton Location" this is usually empty:
If I click on the "Previous" and after again on the "Next" then after few try the harddrives will appear and I can continue the install procedure:
Under the verbose boot process of the installer the HDD and the SSD are visible (manufacturer, type, serial number etc).
My machine is an hybrid graphical Acer Aspire E17 (Intel-Nvidia combo- Nvidia Optimus) and the Beta2 used the vesa driver, this was not the best, but it could to work.
Now the Beta3 would like to use the Intel driver, but it couldn't not. When the installed system start, I got a black screen with the command prompt, I can login, but if I login the first thing what I get is a "zsh-newuser-install" answer. So far I tried some videodriver variation unsuccessfully. The /etc/X11/xorg.conf is OK, maybe the nvidia or intel_load yes line missing from the /boot/loader.conf, I will check this, now I haven't more idea yet.
Verify that an install into a new Boot Environment works properly.
Good test system

Since I first tried Trident a month ago, and now with RC2, when I'm installing on my Intel NUC (model D34010WYK), I find that the Select Installation Location screen is empty. I found that I can go back to the Previous page, then go forward again it will populate the page with the disk and partitions. Sometimes it has taken four times back and forth to get the page populated.
While installing under VMWare on MacBook Pro - Retina, the buttons you need to click to proceed are off screen at the bottom. Makes it hard to continue.
RC3 does not allow installation to a BE in a TrueOS 18.03 rpool.
Possibly same as https://github.com/project-trident/trident-installer/issues/27 but
will upload gpart(8) show and screenshot soon.

This is more of a suggestion if there will ever be an upgrade path, but it's also low hanging fruit, so consider fixing it.
In older releases of TrueOS, new users got an .xprofile created for them that included a line something like:
if [ $i = "/usr/local/share/true/xstartup/enable-inputmethod.sh" ] || [ $i = "/usr/local/share/trueos/xstartup/gpg-agent.sh" ] || [ $i = "/usr/local/share/trueos/xstartup/ssh-agent.sh" ]
That ran these nice system-wide scripts to enable gpg-agent and so on.
If a user just installs trident into a boot environment, this X configuration won't work since there is no longer a /usr/local/share/trueos
but a /user/local/share/trident
Of course most users will only notice this when ssh-agent isn't working as they expect. Then they have to know that this was set up in .xprofile. It's not straightforward and it's not documented anywhere.
In the name of compatibility, I would suggest either:
I suspect number 2 will work in more situations and "just work". You could also go one step further and do the same thing for PC-BSD, but I guess the number of upgrades from that will be low.
During the installation, if I exit to the shell (for example, to work on disk partitioning), I can't find how to return to the installation. I can't find a trident-install program. I see bsdinstall, but that's not it. From the processes running, it looks like the installation program is exited when going to the shell, so exiting the shell doesn't automatically return to the installer.
p.s. this is not specific to RC2. It happened a month ago, too. I think that was BETA3.
Last night, I attempted to install BETA3 on my Dell Lattitude D630 laptop. My laptop has an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M graphics chip. According to nVidia's website, that particular chip is supported by nvidia-driver-340
. During my initial install attempt, I selected the 340 driver. The installation finished successfully. However, upon reboot, the nVidia driver appeared to fail. Below is a screenshot of the error.
I attempted to reinstall with the main nVidia driver, but the same error occurred.
I successfully installed TrueOS desktop on the same laptop earlier this year.
I have problems booting my usb drive on uefi with this error:

(Waiting for #47 to generate the corresponding logs.)
FreeBSD 12 installer allows the creation of a root pool on top of geli.
Trident should offer same functionality.

I have TrueOS installed and running fine (17.12, 18.03), booting UEFI with Linux Mint's GRUB2 bootloader.
The installer finds the ZFS partition, I can select it, but it does not enable the option to install to a new boot environment.
(Edit: actually, no 18.06 here)
Installer should recommend, create, and add to fstab(5) a swap zvol
in the case of a single zpool partition configuration without a dedicated swap gpart.

If the install fails, the "Installation Failed" screen is shown. The text on the second line is not readable in vesa mode. The font is too big and/or the text is too long.
When clicking on the Console button, it drops to a black blank screen, and then reloads the installer.

Hello. Thanks for your work on this promising system. I noticed troubles with localization. The installer doesn't let me choose a time zone nor a keyboard layout (I can choose various keyboard brands but no layout). I can choose a language but it has no effect on the installer, which remains in English. Then, I have to choose passwords using a keyboard layout that's not my real one. Once I reboot in the installed system, the language is en_US, although I had chosen fr_FR in the installer.
Multiple attempts to configure fresh full disk installation with Swap partition led the overall installation failure. Several values for Swap partition were tested: 520 MB, 1024 MB, 2055 MB. The log indicates the ZFS import trident showing exit error code 1.

The cause is incorrect formatting of file /boot/logo-trident.4th read by the forth interpreter.
The words PURPOSE, CONSEQUENTIAL, STRICT, and WAY, all part of the standard legal disclaimer, are incorrectly formatted (looks like bad cut and paste) are are interpreted by forth. This causes an error on processing of logo-trident.4th and no trident is displayed.
However, if corrected, a separate problem occurs. The file "logo-trident.4th" is displayed resulting in an overlapping trident on top of the displayed menu (brand-trident.4th), as shown in the attached image.
A horizontal trident is suggested for

Good test case:
During the installation of Trident-x64-20180831.iso I noticed there was not any option
for backup recovery from a life-preserver backup.
Ideally I thought gprart would handle such case behind the scenes when acting on the destroy option.
But so that not to be dependent on upstream timelines would it be good idea to include the following step in the installer script which does ZFS formatting?
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$DRIVE bs=$NBYTES
Using: Trident-x64-20180831.iso
Downloaded and copied (via dd) to USB thumbdrive.
Booted OK on Lenovo T530 as da0

On reboot, selected Toshiba USB from boot menu

I used the "stable" ISO. X crashes and the system sits there and does nothing. After an hour I then hit ctrl-c and it then told me the installation was complete. Obviously it wasn't, but the ctrl-c ended the launch script so I guess it assumed things went well.
I have an Intel 7th gen CPU and an Nvidia RTX card.
Most peculiarly, it worked A-Ok on my thinkpad with intel graphics and it worked A-Ok in virtualbox.
Possible nvidia bug?
During the install phase, would it possible to get input for the WiFi we are using.
To at least create the /etc/wpa_supplicant, makes first easier to being on the network
And add the ability to add default route as well.
This is a nicety, not a necessity.
(I couldn't find any documentation on the installer from which to get this info, nor any other place where to ask this question...)
Problem 1 - missing header files.
the default install of llvm60 is missing the "*.h" include files that should populate /usr/include. as a result, a test compile of a "hello world" program will fail to find the standard include files.
to recreate:
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
printf("hello world!\n");
return(0);
}
the compile fails with clang failing to find stdio.h reading the output, the "#include ..." lines show where the toolchain will look for includes. there are two:
/usr/local/llvm60/lib/clang/6.0.1/include
/usr/include
neither one of these contains standard C program header files (stdio.h, ctype.h, etc.) all of those "*.h" files are missing.
Problem 2 - missing libraries
Copying the "*.h" files into /usr/include allows the compile to proceed. however, the linker abends as it cannot find some required libraries:
-lgcc
-lgcc_s
-lc
examining the output of cc -v t.c notes that the linker is looking for all libraries in /usr/lib
the required libraries do exist on a recent trueos build (snapshot 208), but not on a trident build.
Background:
The machine has had legacy TrueOS desktop 18.03 installed. Its ZFS pool is tank. It is located on a separate disk drive. Trident installation also resides on its own separate drive where its ZFS pool is trident.
Scenario:
Problem:
The configuration summary is read-only in UI and at this step it still seems to be in the installer process memory so it’s not possible to correct / override it
Solution:
Original Issue: project-trident/trident-build#4
While the keyboard/locale options are getting properly set in the pc-sysinstall config, it does not appear that pc-sysinstall is saving those variables on the installed system properly since PCDM still shows the default locale/keyboard settings on first boot.
Possible Solution:
Is there any chance you will support btrfs on your installer for the void version?
platform lenovo t530, 18.12-PRERELEASE 2018-12-07 fresh install
the llvm60-6.0.1_3 compiler is installed during a fresh installation but the compiler is not immediately usable until
compiler-bootstrap llvm60
is run to set up the missing links. probably should add that to the overlay.

The file /usr/local/etc/devd/cups.conf is used to enable cups to make use of usb printer devices.
With the correct name as /usr/local/etc/devd/cups.conf , devd will read it on startup.
