I have been building such a thing in the last 2 years. And by such a thing I mean a hybrid of B & C.
It is a set of clean, simple and fast matlab routines that read SPEC output data and can be used to plot Poincare sections, calculate and plot B on a surface, plot iota versus toroidal flux, calculate Shafranov Shift, calculate error in the beltrami field, generates input file with certain pressure and iota profiles, runs spec with sequentially increasing beta, runs spec iteratively to bring the toroidal current to zero, etc.
My plan was to clean up a bit (add some more comments and help) and in a week or so do a git commit of a "matlabtools" package with a set of .m routines and a README, so that anyone can start using these. If you think that this could suit you, I will proceed.
Let me know.

I think that Sam also likes to use Matlab, so your suggestion sounds pretty good.
I will probably continue to use Echidna. If I get anyone that wants to use SPEC here at PPPL then they can use Echidna aswell, or they can use the Matlab routines that you and probably Sam will maintain and develop. If anyone ever wants to include a IDL-based visualization into git/spec then they can do so, but at present there seems to be no need.
The visualization matter is not urgent. (I would, however, like to see the online documentation functioning again as soon as possible. I depend on this to remember what task each routine performs.)
