What hits me first when I try it out is that it seemed like I could just "learn" all of the symbols at once and then start the "questions" -- even without actual SRS it seems like a good step would be to batch the learning of the characters into no more than maybe 5 chars at a time. You could go far with just selecting a batch of 5 chars at random, removing a symbol from the batch when it's guessed correctly twice, and then maybe when you reach three symbols in the batch, you add two more to the batch.
