discourse-ratings's Introduction

discourse-ratings

image image

A Discourse plugin that lets you use topics to rate things. Read more about this plugin on Discourse Meta.

  1. Topics can be designated as 'for rating', by being posted in a category with ratings setting on (see below), or by being given the tag 'rating'.

  2. Each ratings topic concerns a single thing ("rating subject"); e.g. a service or a product.

  3. Users rate the rating subject by choosing a star rating when posting (i.e. in the composer).

  4. The average (mean) of all the ratings in the topic is displayed under the topic title and on the relevant topic list item.

To do

  1. Prevent a user from posting in a ratings topic more than once. Currently, users cannot rate in a ratings topic more than once.

  2. Created a sorted topic list (highest to lowest) of all topics within a ratings category or with the 'rating'. Perhaps use Bayseian estimation as discussed in the code comments.

  3. Add translations for the category.for_ratings and composer.your_rating text.

  4. Allow the user to select the tag(s) they wish to use to designate ratings topics in the admin config.

  5. Allow the user to choose the number of total stars in a rating.

  6. Allow the user to change the rating item image (i.e. use something other than stars).

Installation

To install using docker, add the following to your app.yml in the plugins section:

hooks:
  after_code:
    - exec:
        cd: $home/plugins
        cmd:
          - mkdir -p plugins
          - git clone https://github.com/angusmcleod/discourse-ratings.git

and rebuild docker via

cd /var/discourse
./launcher rebuild app

discourse-ratings's Issues

Suggestion: no rating for the first post

Your plug-in is great and I really enjoyed using it. My team is building a site called Science Commons where academics can discuss research papers. Each topic is about a single paper; the first post is a "wiki" that contains a summary of the paper. I would like to use your rating plug-in for Science Commons. But my concern is that when I turn on the rating tag, I am forced to give a rating on the first post. Is there a way such that no rating is required for the first post? I want to be an impartial admin who posts the paper and don't want to give my own opinion about the paper.

make average rating a float

Right now I think the average rating is an integer. So for example if in 100 reviews, 99 of them would be 5 stars and only 1 would be 4 star, the average review would be 4 star for this situation. Am I right?

If this is true, I think the average rating is better to be a float rather than an integer.

Cannot see and use the star-rating buttons in the composer.

Hi, Angus. Thanks for another great plugin! Unfortunately something is broken. I've enabled the ratings setting for one category and here's what I see:

  1. On the Topic's page the (i) Rating Topic drop-down appears under the Category badge (Ok).
  2. I click "Reply" and don't see the star-rating buttons in the composer (not Ok).
  3. I see this error in the browser console*:
TypeError: Cannot read property 'addObject' of null
  • But only when I put some text in the composer box, click "ESC" (to get rid of the notification) and then refresh the page (before submitting a reply).

ps.: Single container discourse on a separate VPS, all discourse components and plugins are up to date.

Update: after rebuilding the discourse app, I can no longer reproduce the TypeError... but I still don’t see the star-ratings buttons.

Error when deleting rating

I saw this error in my error log today and I think it might have been triggered by me trying to remove a rating from a post:

API support

Any hope the feature could be accessible through the API?
That'd would a huge win for integration (eg: mobile users)

Side note: any hint about how anonymous users are handled?

plugin.rb

Hi angus.
can you describe plugin.rb codes?
I am beginner at plugin coding and most of the codes you have wrote is confusing for me.(I know ruby)
