$file should be a valid resource, but instead it's false.

Change the following line:
if($this->_currentstring) {
to
if($this->_currentstring !== false) {

I needed a class like this to be able to write directly to a string stream 
as opposed to just read from it. Unfortunately, your class only supports 
reading.

I have modified the code a little to also support writing. Do a diff with 
the attached file to see the changes.

There is more error handling/checking that needs to be done (such as 
checking the fopen mode), but this will work for now.

Tested on PHP 5.2.6.
