We had two flags: Nashorn extensions (enabled by default) and Nashorn compatibility mode (disabled by default). This was confusing. So, the Nashorn extensions flag was removed and the corresponding functionality (including __DIR__ Nashorn extension) was moved behind the Nashorn compatibility mode. That's why __DIR__ become disabled by default.
I am not aware of any replacement available outside Nashorn compatibility mode. Is there a reason why you can't/don't want to use --nashorn-compat flag/option?

No particular reason - it felt appropriate to attempt to use Graal "cleanly". I'll try the compatibility mode!
