We will set up a table outside of the collection venue while one of our committee members will sit inside the collection venue. Students will come by, scan the QR code or link to check for their names and just collect the kit. If we are using OLab, OLab is located at building 2 level 4, which is not frequently accessed by any student and thus have little to no human traffic. [Website] Fifth Row Directory Page Loading Issue

This issue is to document my thought process and my approach in attempting to solve the loading issue for the Fifth Row Directory page (directory.html), as well as to collect any possible external suggestions for an elegant solution.

Embedding 55 iframes on the same webpage are going to cause browser loading problems such as hanging up, lagging, or even crashing and burning down. In an attempt to solve this loading issue, I implemented lazyloading for both directory.html and watchlist.html. The implementation is twofold:

  1. First, we set the data-src attributes of each iframe to their respective Microsoft Stream source URLs. Then, after we load all the iframes with their src attribute still undefined, we run this script to load only the on-screen iframes by setting their respective src attributes to their data-src attributes if native browser lazyloading is supported.
  2. The else statement will then run if native browser lazyloading is not supported, which would lead to the fetching of the lazysizes.min.js file as a lazyloading solution provided by an external vendor. lazysizes will enable lazyloading for iframes with class="lazyload".

This solution worked for the short term, but admittedly it is neither permanent nor the most elegant solution. Once a user has accumulated enough loaded iframes, the browser will start to lag and slow down again. This might prevent a user from eventually loading all the iframes on the page (especially if their computer or device does not possess enough memory power). A possible solution to this would be to unload iframes as they go out of the load-in distance threshold. However, this might cause too many requests to the Microsoft Stream server since whenever the iframes scroll out of the user's viewport, when the users scroll back to said iframes, the iframes would need to re-load all of the content all over again. Thus, such a solution would be quite inefficient. Another solution would be to simply separate groups of iframes based on their cluster, but this will generate additional pages, which may seem a little not elegant. Another solution would be to combine the previous two solutions in a kind of hybrid implementation, whereby iframes in previous clusters/sections would be unloaded once the user scrolls past those iframes. While this hybrid implementation could work, it still faces the "repetitive loading" issue. Yet another possibility would be to just load still images of each video's thumbnail, which would then possess an a tag which opens up a new _blank page with the corresponding video's URL (similar to the implementation on YouTube's homepage). However, this will force users to tediously go back and forth between each page of each video and the main website page directory, at which point we might as well just redirect them to the SUTD DiscoverSUTD Fifth Row Showcase Microsoft Stream channel/group link instead (since the Microsoft Stream page has a sort-of "recommended" section as well).

If anyone has a suggestion on how to elegantly solve this issue, please feel free to comment down below. Otherwise, this issue will serve as a future reference. Future generations of DiscoverSUTD teams might want to investigate further into solving and eliminating this issue altogether.

[FRS] Freshie Intro to Climbing

Freshies Intro to Rock Climbing

Abstract

Freshies enjoy a free guided climbing session at the school's boulder wall (only mask and sports attire needed!) You can expect to not only learn more about the sport, but also take home basic climbing techniques you can use in other bouldering gyms.

Student Organisation organising this Session

SUTD Climbers

Session Intent for Participants

Key Takeaways

  1. The uniqueness of climbing as a sport and why members of the club keep doing it.
  2. Learning climbing safety, basic techniques and general climbing rules. All of which can be applied in any climbing gym!
  3. The key benefits of joining our club such as coached training as well as cheaper rates in gyms outside.

Prerequisites

The sessions are designed for complete beginners, so no knowledge of climbing is required, but there are still some prerequisites:

  • Climbing is a full contact sport. Participants must be able to handle the physical demands of the sport.
  • Minimal fear of height as boulding involves jumping from a height onto cushions. Participants will be briefed on how to do so safely
  • A strict adherance to the safety rules stated during the session and ability to make sensible decisions to ensure their own safety
  • Willingness to step out of their comfort zone and be adventurous

Quantifiable Points

  • climbing techniques
  • problem solving
  • overcoming fear
  • climbing safety
  • community/team
  • pushing your limits
  • more than just arm strength
  • the next big sport

Session Details

No. of Participants: 12 - 16 per session + 4 facilitators
Venue: ISH 2
Time Slot: 7.00pm - 9.30pm
Session Dates:16/9(Wed) 17/9(Thur), 23/9(Wed), 24/9(Thur)
Session Outline:

Time Activity
7.00-7.10 Participants gather in ISH, sanitise hands + temp taking before spliting into groups
7.10-7.45 Climbing Specific Warm Up
7.45-8.00 Wall Safety Briefing + Fall test
8.00-9.20 Climbing time! The wall would be split into 4 sections, each containing a route that will teach the participants a climbing technique. Each group is allocated 20min per section and will rotate between each section.
9.20-9.30 Debrief + Warm Down

Safety Measures:

  • Wall will be sanitised by spraying an alcohol solution on the mats and tiles before and after the session.
  • Participants are expected to sanitise their hands before the session with provided hand sanitisers.
  • Mask on at all times unless climbing on the wall.
  • Participants will only mingle in their allocated groups. They will maintain 1m distance apart and 2m distance between the groups.
  • At least 1 certified first aider will be present during the event
  • Participants will be closely monitored by facilitator when they are climbing. Only 1 participant on the wall at a time, per group.

Potential Issues:

  • ISH only allows maximum capacity of 50pax. We have to compete with basketball, badminton and volleyball. Not sure what they have lined up on our side. Suggestion: Book an earlier timeslot for using the wall, subject to OSL approval
  • We are only allocated booking on Mon and Wed 7pm - 10pm and monday bookings are reserved for coached training. We are still in the midst of requesting OSL to book the wall for Tues and Thurs as well.

Facilitators

The faciliators would be the current Exco members of the club. The years of climbing experience varies between members, some having climbed for slightly over a year since they started upon entering SUTD while others have years of climbing experience behind them. All of us have experience climbing in the numerous gyms around Singapore and some even have experience climbing on natural rock! While everyone's climbing journey is different, the common trait we all share is a genuine passion for the sport we hope to impart to our participants.
