Our existing links out are for sites like wikidata and Wikipedia, where the URL we link to is the URL for the thing we're linking. It would be the same with FB pages and Twitter handles - they have a canonical URL.
Something like airport codes does not have a canonical URL, so I don't think we should link their text.

Speaking personally my opinion is that we shouldn't be blessing one site over others with a link like this - if we do it for then what do we do when another site comes along and asks for the same? Do we start adding a popup menu to allow users to select their preferred site? That way lies madness...
