OCI Working Group: Auth

Mission Statement

Authentication and authorization are a key requirement for registries to control access. Implementations of this in registries and clients have roughly followed standards set by Docker and have mostly focused on compatibility with specific implementations of registries or clients. This working group will define a standard to be supported by OCI compatible registries and clients when support for authentication and authorization is required.

WWW-Authenticate multiple auth-schemes?

Currently, most registries return a single WWW-Authenticate header with a 401 during the initial authentication ping. However as per spec, multiple headers are allowed in the response. So in theory a client can pick and choose depending on how it is deployed.

Consider adding a proposal from the docker specification

One of the items discussed during the call was to see if the group can use the docker specs called out in the External Specs to create a Propsal A or something similar to https://github.com/opencontainers/wg-reference-types/tree/main/docs/proposals
