It works because fred boudon has made a fork and released long time ago a conda version on its conda channel.
However, the official one is on openalea3 channel. It is maintained on the long term.

Not really.
The correct repository is openalea3
conda install openalea.mtg -c openalea3 -c conda-forge
I will add it to the README.

Ah, interesting, the command seemed to work which is surprising, but I may have missed a printout or I may be misunderstanding conda, I haven't used it much. Thank you for the addition and the quick reply!
