s29's Issues

NTR: sampling processor (upper filter) and sampling processor (lower filter)

2 new combined S29 terms needed for: nvs-vocabs/P01#227

"sampling processor (upper filter) " with definition "The top filter in a cascade or sequential filtration setup designed to exclude material retained by the filter. Only material and liquid that pass through the filter are used in the analyses."

and

"sampling processor (lower filter) " with definition "The bottom filter in a cascade or sequential filtration setup used to collect particulate material from a sample (typically water sample). Only the material collected on the filter is used in the analysis."

NTR: Request for S29 geomorphological feature

Term name (PrefLabel)

geomorphological feature

Definition

A topographic or bathymetric feature of the seafloor, coastline or terrestrial land surface created by physical, chemical or biological processes, such as beaches, dunes, bedforms, seamounts and ridges.

NTR: technical replicate

related to: nvs-vocabs/P01#207

Proposed definition: Subsamples, or repeated processing, of a parent sample, to capture variation in handling of each replicate, or simply to repeat the processing.

NTR: conductivity cell (internal)

A new term was required to describe the internal conductivity cell of a CTD instrument.

A new S18 term was created 'conductivity cell', documented here:
nvs-vocabs/S18#11
Definition: A glass cell containing electrodes, usually platinum, used to measure the electrical conductivity of the liquid occupying the cell.

A new S19 was created 'internal':
Definition: The inner part or feature of an object or entity.

This was combined to create a new S29 term:
Code: PE001493
Preferred label: conductivity cell (internal)
Definition: The internal part of a glass cell containing electrodes, usually platinum, used to measure the electrical conductivity of the liquid occupying the cell.

This S29 term will be live on the NVS from 0730 UTC tomorrow morning.

NTR: new particle size classes

The following S29 terms have been created and are now live on the NVS:

PE001480 particles (dust)
PE001481 particles (fine-grained sediment)
PE001479 particles (mud carbonate)
PE001482 particles (mud mineral)
PE001483 particles (sand carbonate)
PE001484 particles (sand mineral)
PE001485 particles (gravel carbonate)
PE001486 particles (gravel mineral)

NTR S18/S29 for 'survey'

Definition: A uniquely identifiable programme of data collection.

Based on MEDIN definition:
read_this_first.pdf
This definition also provides examples 'such as a research cruise, moored instrument deployment or survey event'
A survey event is defined as 'a means to group samples together – for example, a long transect broken up into smaller transects; A defined survey area where several transects have been placed; or a drop-down video split into sample clips by observed changes in biotope.'

Associated with: nvs-vocabs/P01#177

NTR: Request new S29 term seafloor and mean sea level

New S29 term required in order to migrate terms of Sea-floor depth as explained in nvs-vocabs/P01#213.

New term available on the NVS in the morning of 13/09/2024:

PE001549 seafloor relative to Mean Sea Level datum - The property relates to the solid surface underlying a sea or an ocean relative to a vertical datum based on the arithmetic mean of hourly heights observed over the National Tidal Datum Epoch. Shorter series are specified in the name; e.g. monthly mean sea level and yearly mean sea level. Adapted from https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/datum_options.html

NTR: new S29 to describe heat

New S29 to be created for heat.

Preferred label: heat
Definition: Energy transferred to or from a thermodynamic system, by means of convection, conduction, radiation or friction.

This is in relation to nvs-vocabs/P01#157

NTR: temporal replicate

Related to: nvs-vocabs/P01#207

Proposed definition: samples collected independently over a timeframe, specifically collected to estimate changes to the subject of interest over that timeframe.

NTR: spatial replicate

Related to: nvs-vocabs/P01#207

Proposed definition: samples collected independently over some area, specifically collected to estimate statistical information about that area.

NTR: sampling platform

Defined as: A structure or vehicle that serves as a base for deploying sampling or sensing equipment.

Harmonise particle size classes that are between 0 and an upper limit using one single convention

We created some entries in the S29 vocabulary for particle grain size classes that are effectively synonyms:
See e.g. particles (0-1um) (http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/S29/current/PE000318/) and particles (<1um) (http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/S29/current/PE000226/)
We have 10 size classes affected by this.
We also have 23 terms which use the “0 to upper limit“ convention and 40 that use the “<” convention.
Before doing this investigation the thought was to deprecate the “<” in favour of the more explicit “0-“ (see #6).

However this will result in more S29 and P01 codes being changed than if hamonising on the "<" convention.
Also the "<" convention is more commonly used and is what human users would normally use or search for.
Also the “<” convention is in keeping with what we have used in the matrix definitions based on size range.
So the decision leans in favour of harmonising on “<” rather than “0-“
We will add the "0-" convention as an alternative label.

NTR: relative to mean sea level

New S29 required:

  • relative to mean sea level

Existing S18: S1800001 not applicable
Existing S19: S1900001 not applicable
Existing S20: S2000008 mean sea level
