NTR: Seine nets

From Neil Holdsworth by email:
I would advise referring to the FAO terminology as the accepted master reference for Fisheries technology: http://www.fao.org/faoterm/viewEntry/en/?entryId=98138
Best, Neil

seine net
Definition
Nets which are usually set from a boat, and can be operated either from the shore (beach seines) or from the boat itself (e.g., Danish or Scottish seines). The manner of capture is to surround an area of water with a very long net, with or without a bag at the centre. The net is usually operated by two ropes fixed to its ends, used both for hauling it in and for herding the fish.

Subject: [sdc-tech] New L05 - seine nets

Hello,

We are proposing to create a new L05 term ‘seine nets’ with the following definition:

‘A surrounding net designed to sample fish that hangs vertically in the water with its bottom edge held down by weights and its top edge buoyed by floats. Seine nets can be deployed from the shore as a beach seine, or from a boat.’

NTR: Request for L05 Argo Float

Required

Term name (PrefLabel)

Argo Float

Definition

A profiling float with a suite of sensors used in the international Argo program. The floats drift with the ocean currents and move up and down between the surface and depth. The data and the float position are relayed to satellites and then on to receiving stations on shore. New float designs have allowed floats to profile deeper, to work in ice-covered regions and to measure other ocean properties beyond the basic salinity temperature and pressure but all must maintain common and high standards set by the international steering team.

Deprecation of terms 'scallop dredge' and 'queen scallop dredge' from L05 [BODCNVS-309]

Two terms currently published in L05 are considered instrument designs and may be more appropriate in L22. This would compliment previous descriptions of dredge instruments in L22 and align with other models of benthic samplers (e.g. Van Veen Grab). Therefore, we propose to deprecate the following terms from L05 and create equivalent terms in L22:

URL: http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/71/
PREFLABEL: scallop dredges
DESCRIPTION: 'Rigid structures with a chain mail collecting bag, towed on the seabed to target king scallops. Generally used by towing several dredges side by side behind the vessel (source: seafish.org).'

URL: http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/72/
PREFLABEL: queen scallop dredges
DESCRIPTION: 'The dredges used to target queen scallops are wider and higher than a traditional scallop dredge. They do not have tooth bar across the front, instead they have either a metal grid, or tickler chains to get the scallops to lift up off the seabed and swim into the dredge. The scallops then fall back into a bag made of metal rings. Some fishermen are replacing the tickler chain and metal grid with a strip of rubber matting across the front of the dredge (source seafish.org).'

NTR: Request for sediment suction samplers [BODCNVS-324]

Required

Term name (PrefLabel)

sediment suction samplers

Definition

Devices that collect samples of surface sediment using suction. The mechanism of suction can be accomplished by either vacuum, by pressure difference between the air inside the sampler and surrounding water, by pumping water directly into the sampler or by under pressure air to elevate the sediment inside the sampler. Devices are typically diver- or remotely-operated.

NTR: fyke net

We have received a request for a new L22 term: twin fyke nets (BODCNVS-1962).

A new L05 term 'fyke net' will be required.

A definition has been found at https://www.fao.org/faoterm/viewEntry/en/?entryId=98431, as below:

Normally used in shallow water, consists of cylindrical or cone-shaped bags mounted on rings or other rigid structures, completely covered by netting and completed by wings or leaders which guide the fish towards the opening of the bags. The fyke nets, fixed on the bottom by anchors, ballast or stakes, may be used separately or in groups.

Update to existing term: Fish-finder echosounders

The acoustic device landscape has changed since this term was created - the term echosounder is typically associated with devices which have vertical directionality, whereas more contemporary fish finding devices also employ horizontal directionality in operation. Sonars can have vertical or horizontal directionality, so all echosounders are a type of sonar, but a sonar is not a type of echosounder.

In order to capture fish finding devices that have horizontal directionality we are proposing to amend the preflabel for the existing L05 term from Fish-finder echosounders to Fish-finder acoustic instruments, and enhancing the description to include the terms sonars and echosounders to aid discoverability.

Seeking input from @roy-lowry before proceeding.

Update to term: Pinger sub-bottom profilers

To enable distinction with request #17. We would like to propose the following updates to wording for term 394 - Pinger sub-bottom profilers.

Marine seismic sources that send sound pulses into the sub-sea floor sediments. The sound pulses bounce off the sea floor and subsequent buried sediment layers according to differences in their acoustic impedance (hardness) and in turn, their density. Pingers are linear, single channel, high frequency systems that typically operate at frequencies greater than 2 kHz and penetrate to several tens of metres.

This request duplicates a discussion in the L22 repository. Please see nvs-vocabs/L22#155

NTR: Request for L05 profiling sonars

Required

Term name (PrefLabel)

NTR: BODCNVS-194 addition of scallop dredge and queen dredge to L05

We have received a new request to add two types of dredge to L05: scallop dredge and queen scallop dredge. We were given the following links: https://seafish.org/gear/gear/profile/scallop-dredge and https://seafish.org/gear/gear/profile/queen-scallop-dredge

The FAO entry for fishing dredges has the following description: gears which are dragged along the bottom to catch shellfish. They consist of a mouth frame to which a holding bag constructed of metal rings or meshes is attached. There are two main type of dredges; heavy dredges towed by boats (boat dredges), and lighter ones operated by hand in shallow waters (hand dredges) (source: http://www.fao.org/fishery/geartype/104/en)

Proposed new L05 records

PrefLabel: Scallop dredges
Description: Rigid structures with a chain mail collecting bag, towed on the seabed to target king scallops. Generally used by towing several dredges side by side behind the vessel (source: seafish.org).

PrefLabel: Queen scallop dredges
Description: The dredges used to target queen scallops are wider and higher than a traditional scallop dredge. They do not have tooth bar across the front, instead they have either a metal grid, or tickler chains to get the scallops to lift up off the seabed and swim into the dredge. The scallops then fall back into a bag made of metal rings. Some fishermen are replacing the tickler chain and metal grid with a strip of rubber matting across the front of the dredge (source seafish.org).

New L05 term proposal

We propose the following term to cover instruments such as PCR analysers.

PREFLABEL: Thermal cyclers

DEFINITION:
Instruments that repeatedly heat and cool samples in a series of steps. They are typically used to amplify segments of DNA via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). They can also be used to facilitate other temperature-sensitive reactions, including restriction enzyme digestion or rapid diagnostics.

Clarity for specifics on the assignment of L05 term to Underwater Vision Profilers

Hello all,

I am reaching out to gain clarity on the appropriate assignment of an L05 term to an Underwater Vision Profiler instrument. The instrument in question takes microscopic images of zooplankton and large phytoplankton, and has software that can further identify and categorize images through machine learning.

From my understanding, three L05 terms could possible be used to describe this instrument. These are:
SDN::L05::180 - underwater cameras
SDN::L05::21 - plankton recorders
SDN::L05::352 - plankton counters

Currently I am learning more toward one of either term 180 or 352. I believe term 21 might be referring to another type of device that skims across the water surface and uses other optical techniques to capture plankton data.

Term 180 could fit because the UVP is a sort of underwater camera, but so could term 352 as the instrument's purpose is to count and sort plankton species.

Would anyone have insight into how to approach this?

NTR: Parametric sub-bottom profilers

Required

Term name (PrefLabel)

Parametric sub-bottom profilers

Definition

Marine seismic sources that send sound pulses into the sub-sea floor sediments. The sound pulses bounce off the sea floor and subsequent buried sediment layers according to differences in their acoustic impedance (hardness) and in turn, their density. Parametric sub-bottom profilers are non-linear systems that transmit two different higher frequencies that interact during sound propagation to generate a resultant lower operating frequency with narrow bandwidth. They typically operate at frequencies greater than 2 kHz and penerate to several hundreds of metres.

Proposal to broaden L05 term '311' - 'cameras'

Dear colleagues

We wish to propose the following changes to L05 (classification) terms related to cameras. The existing L05 terms for cameras (as shown below) has led to some confusion due to their specificity, particularly term '311' - 'cameras', which actually describes aerial and satellite cameras (as opposed to underwater and laboratory cameras) rather than a generic term which the preferred label 'cameras' may imply. Thus, this term may have been used incorrectly.

http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/180/ - underwater cameras
http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/311/ - cameras
http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/LAB41/ - laboratory cameras

To resolve the issue, allowing easier administration and avoiding the creation of numerous terms to cover all future cases, we would like to propose using one term for cameras by broadening the term '311' to cover all cameras as follows:

CODE: 311
PREFLABEL: cameras
DESRIPTION:
All types of photographic equipment used to record visual images. Includes stills, video, film and digital systems.

Thus, we would also like to deprecate the following terms:

http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/180/ - underwater cameras
http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L05/current/LAB41/ - laboratory cameras

We will ensure that all L22 terms that are semantically linked to deprecated L05 terms are reassigned to the broader 'cameras' (311) concept.

Please could all responses be made by the Monday the 15th June.

Many thanks
