objc_cover's Introduction

Say you have this Objective-C code:

- (void)notUsed {
	return;
}

- (void)actuallyUsed {
	return;
}

// ...

[self actuallyUsed];

Thanks to /usr/bin/otool, you can get clues about potentially unused methods, like this:

$ python objc_cover.py /Users/nst/Desktop/iCalReport
# the following methods may be unreferenced
-[MyClass notUsed]

The idea was put first by "Luke the Hiesterman" on the Apple Objective-C list.

objc_cover's Issues

Does this work?

If I use an IPA I receive:
Usage: objc_cover.py MACH_O_FILE

If I decompress it and open the binary I receive:
can't find implemented methods

Should I use a special flag when compiling or debug?

it would be better if we can filter the getter/setter methods

good idea, but not very useful in practice. the output of this script is full of ObjC property getter/setter methods. I know this is limited by otool's lacking knowledge for the runtime info.
what do you think about the Clang static analytic tools?
