international-day's Issues

Enrollment

We need to set up an enrolment process.

What I think I need:

  • Chapter Name
  • Chapter Contact
    • github username
    • skype username

I would like to manage this via github as we are already here.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Note: Created a international-day group

I create a group for the people that organise the international day in their respective chapters: @nodeschool/international-day

This group allows us to address all the people at the same time. Please make sure that you don't miss a message!

Note: @lvivier @kildem @davyengone and @Forres : You were invited to the group also (I think you need to accept the invitation before you get informed)

idea: publish a module to npm for your chapter (like npm install berlin -g)

Had this crazy idea just now --

For international day, a group activity can be putting together a CLI module for your chapter. For example I could npm install berlin -g to get the berlin CLI tool. When I run berlin I should get instructions in my CLI in German that help me join the berlin chapter, install the first workshop and get any other basic info I need.

These CLI modules could be a good 'first install' experience for people new to the command line. Once they get berlin installed they can join the Berlin discussion board https://github.com/nodeschool/berlin/issues and sign up for the next event, or install one of the nodeschool workshops. When Berlin does a workshop they can have people start by installing the berlin CLI tool from NPM.

This could be a cool way for groups that come to international day to team up and publish a real thing during the day. They can include things in their module like https://www.npmjs.com/package/picture-tube or ascii animations.

This is a rough idea, feedback welcome!

Pre-international day organizer hack parties

Hey all, I had an idea today to do a couple short hack parties for the next 2 saturdays specifically for organizers:

For example, heres the one I'll be doing in PDX: max-mapper/messages#52

Example:

"
It will be at my house in SE Portland. I'll provide gigabit internet and snacks and we can hit up the food carts at 28th and Division close to my house for lunching.

Stuff to hack on:

"

Then I pinged individual organizers in my town to invite them. You can do it at your house or at a cafe/brewpub. Anywhere from 2-8 people is a good size, you don't need that many. The main idea is to get together and brainstorm to make sure the international day event is all set up.

Google Hangout

@Sequoia mentioned a desire to have an inter-chapter video link.

Can you setup a Google Hangout, ownership should change to each timezone contact during the day

@nodeschool Twitter Account Access

Im just chatting with martin about the nodeschool twitter channel and am wondering if can we have access to tweet from it?

we need to do some PR and on the day tweets

@maxogden I don't know who else to direct this at..

Social Media hashtag

I think it would be nicer to use an specific hashtag for this event rather than using #nodeschool only. This will help to separate tweets/posts during this particular event from other that took place before. Some suggestions:

  • #nodeschool-international-day
  • #nodeschool-international
  • #nodeschool-int-day
  • #nid

Worldwide video broadcast

What you guys think about creating Hangouts all-over-the-globe video conversation? Not sure if that can work, but getting live stream from each chapter and putting that onto a grid would be awesome. Just to show we are everywhere.

Colombo Event

Hi,

I'm the Co-Organizer of Colombo Javascript Meetup.Like to do a nodeschool international day event in Colombo.

Iran Location

Hello @hrayatnia ! You signed up for Iran but failed to mention a location! Where in Iran will you hold it?

Stop enrollment?

@iancrowther Only few of the people that enrolled have actually created event sites and its already May 1st. It feels like there is only few time left to prepare the event. In order to not be bothered with updating the site and things for the latecomers I thought it might a good to stop enrollment and focus on working with the chapters that signed up?

Proposal: telepresence chain Around The World

So I would like to do some telepresence to other events to strengthen the "international"/celebratory atmosphere at our event. One Big Google Hangout has been proposed but I fear this would be sort of a cluster-fork and not that useful ultimately (an ad-hoc, high latency conversation among 10 parties who don't know eachother seems tough). I'd prefer to have 1 or 2 or 3 direct links to single events, so you could walk up to a screen at our event & see/hear/talk to someone at an event somewhere else, 1:1 (or in groups but 1 party โ†”๏ธ 1 party rather than 6 party FFA).

Proposal

  1. Create a list of people interested in this sort of telepresence at their event
  2. Each event coordinates (ideally) with 1 event west of them, and 1 east of them
  3. Now we (sort of) have a chain going around the world, link by link!

Additional stuff

  • The more links the merrier but this proposal says "prioritize getting 1 east & 1 west first"
  • This will be tough across the atlantic-- basically if I had a East Coast to UK link it would go dark on our end around noon & wouldn't start on their end 'til maybe 3pm, but that's OK! ๐Ÿ‘
  • Organization is light-weight: all that's needed is a list & description & people to point to it; event coordinators can add themselves to the list & reach out to other events directly & update the list when they've got someone east or west so it's easy to see who needs a partner still (i.e. no need for central coordination)

๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿ‘ฌ ๐Ÿ‘ญ

If we linked events in a direct chain, someone at an event in India could pass a message to someone in London thus:

  1. Pune person tells person in Dubai to tell London "what's up!!"
  2. Dubai passes message to Cairo
  3. Cairo to Athens
  4. Athens to Prague
  5. Prague to Zurich
  6. Zurich to Brussels
  7. Brussels tells London "Pune says 'What's up!!!'"

๐Ÿ˜ธ could be fun. would of course require more than 1:1 link coordination so there was an unbroken chain.

create event map (need help compiling data)

Can someone take the Enrollment thread and turn it into a CSV like this:

name,lat,lon,chapter-url
"NodeSchool San Francisco","37.77493","-122.41942","http://github.com/nodeschool/sanfrancisco"

lat/lon can be approximate, e.g. the city. URL can be the nodeschool org or an even url if one exists

Then I can plug that data into http://nodeschool.io/globe and embed the globe on the nodeschool homepage for a while, so people can find local chapters easily

You can put the CSV here or check it into this repo, then we can update as new chapters enroll later

Inter-chapter communication

I love the idea of having a Hangout as a means of making the participants feel like they are part of a global movement, however, in my experience Hangouts between tech events are always awkward: it's incredibly easy to get audio feedback, and in the best of cases you are looking at a room full of people in chairs.

An approach I'd like to discuss is to incentivate people to tweet, upload pictures and videos stating their name, where they are from and the workshop they are having. That way we'd create a digital trail that we could easily get on stage to get people excited.

Thoughts?

define & delegate tasks

Hi All,

I have added DELEGATED.md to the repo. This file is meant as a record for who has taken ownership of specific tasks.

PLEASE can you contribute to this list add yourself where applicable.

Many Thanks

Looking for help running the day

Hi,

I am looking for two members of the nodeschool community to help out with the "on the day" organising.

We have split the chapters into 4 blocks of timezones and really need to identify two figure heads to help with the timezone when I'll be asleep.

The role would involve:

  • Being a point of contact during your time slot
  • Prompting chapters to record their intro videos
  • Answering questions regarding participation

Please get in touch if you can help out.

Homepage love needed

Right now there are too many branches of two repos handing the display of the website of the nodeschool international day. Can someone give it a little love ๐Ÿ˜‰

We have got a big screen-wall, what to do with it?

OIT (Osaka institute of technology) will open their place for our international day in osaka โค๏ธ . and they have a pretty big (massive?) 5x3 3dscreen display system setup there with a neat processor farm backing it up.
I wonder if we could use them for something ๐Ÿ˜ They are experimenting with using node.js to control the displays.

Also, they have two industrial conferencing cameras and if necessary 2 additional, slightly older, video walls o_O

I further heard that they are in partnership with the Boston University (that has a similar/same setup). Wouldn't it be cool if Node.JS where to join from there (not sure that is possible)...

Create Sign-up Event pages

@nodeschool/international-day Usually at events we many people use signup pages. It would be good to have meetup/ti.to/doorkeeper/etc. pages for the international-day of each chapter. If done could you post them here or add them to the csv that is part of #19 ?

Poster for Promotion

Hey everyone,

@velchevski created a quick poster from the International Day banner for promoting the event. Hanging posters in cafes is a good way to reach people that wouldn't otherwise hear about NodeSchool.

Here is the source sketch file and the pdf, so you can customize them for your event, if you want:
https://github.com/nodeschool/berlin/blob/master/poster-international-day-2015.sketch
https://github.com/nodeschool/berlin/blob/master/poster-international-day-2015.pdf

And Here's how it looks like:

Shirt

Does anyone have a shirt design worked out? I plan to get shirts for our "trainers" so we are easily identifiable (and as a momento of the event of course).

Currently my plan is just to scale the international day hex sticker up & stick it on a shirt, maybe putting "trainer" or something & maybe our chapter name and/or 2015 below, but if someone with an eye for design already has something like this laid out, I'd love to piggyback! ๐Ÿ‘• ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ‘Œ

international day mini-film

I think it would so cool if we could get organizers to record video + audio at their events so that we can edit it into a mini-film afterwards.

For example, we could request that each event interviews a couple attendees and ask them the same set of questions. Or do something more fun like have every group do some wacky dance moves that @nvcexploder choreographs.

Does anyone have experience doing this kind of thing or have funny ideas?

Who/Where in Italy?

There are two sign-ups for "Italy", one by @mcollina and one by @kylden without a mention of a city?! Where do you host it? Who is the host?

Distributed Computing Cluster

It would be awesome if we had a nodeschool event which everyone wrote a node in a distributed system. Ideally, something that would become "more powerful" as more people join it. I was thinking something along the lines of a parallel computing, torrent, or something block chain like. Security/noob friendly are both big considerations.

Maybe a torrent of the latest node/iojs release? Or the nodeschool image?
Or a map of everyone connected at the same time that doesn't use a central server?

Here's some prior art/ideas:
