Often it is desirable to switch the layout to vertical split. So that the code is on the left and the result on the right. The controls probably should be at the bottom or the top then.

This is probably possible with a pure CSS approach. Then JS only needs to apply a .splitVertical class to the body and the CSS can do its magic based on it.

This should be implemented before any other visible features, as other features might need to be aware of the dynamic layout.
