binary-waterfall's Issues

smartscreen

Windows does not seem to like this program for some reason. It says it's going to put my PC at risk.

1, 2, and 4bpp color format support

There are older applications and binaries for different machines which use these bitdepths, especially 4bpp. Perhaps these could be added as w1, w2, and w4 as color formats?

Video Export error: [Errno 32] Broken pipe

Getting this error when exporting anything as a video. Latest version of ffmpeg is installed on the system, and added to PATH. Audio export works completely fine.

image

An error occurred while exporting the video: [Errno 32] Broken pipe

MoviePy error: FFMPEG encountered the following error while writing file videoTEMP_MPY_wvf_snd.mp3:

b'videoTEMP_MPY_wvf_snd.mp3: Permission denied\r\n'

In case it helps, make sure you are using a recent version of FFMPEG (the versions in the Ubuntu/Debian repos are deprecated).

few issues i got so far

  • Nasty perf issues on resolution settings higher than default [i turned it up to 160x160 and it's just about managing 2 frames per second]
  • lack of setting saving. having to set Literally Everything up every time you start up the program is kind of irritating.
  • [personal preference but still worth mentioning] the color format setting could probably benefit from being a regular dropdown menu with a few chosen color formats and a "Custom" option at the bottom of the list or a button beneath the dropdown allowing you to insert a custom color format
  • window resizing should be doable by just dragging the window's borders\corners as opposed to restricting it to a setting. if there is no intention on changing this i highly suggest at the very least disabling the maximize button in the window's title bar as it basically does nothing anyways

If a previous file finished playback, opening another will disable the media controls

OS: Windows 10 22H2

Software Version: v3.6.4

Reproduction Steps

  • Open Binary Waterfall, select any file. It will play normally. Allow it to complete playing.
  • Using File > Open, open another file that is large enough to produce at least a few seconds of audio. The file will display in the window, but the Play, -5 Seconds, +5 Seconds, and Rewind to Beginning buttons don't perform any action and the seek bar is stuck at the beginning.
  • Using File > Open, reopen the same file. It should now be playable.

No such file or directory error when trying to use binary waterfall

I don't have much info, but i'm going to show what happened in the CMD prompt.
C:\Users\sunny>python binary-waterfall.py -h
python: can't open file 'C:\Users\censoreduser\binary-waterfall.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory

I already opened the app and i think it installed it? i'm not exactly sure.

Audio Export error: [WinError 2] The system cannot find the file specified

Hello,
I was playing around with Binary Waterfall today and came across some cool sounds I want to sample. However, I am unable to export any audio no matter what file I open or where the file is, as it gives me the following error and outputs an empty MP3 file:
"An error occurred while exporting the audio: [WinError 2] The system cannot find the file specified"

I have a folder on my desktop that the BW application and my exported files are located called "BinaryWaterfall".

I can thankfully work around this by recording Stereo Mix in Audacity, but it's not ideal.

No mobile

I want to see what roms like .nes .z64 etc and other exes look like but I’m only on iPad can there be some mobile or web version of this because it’s really cool

Can't open the exe file

I cant even open the exe file and yes i scanned it with malwarebytes but nothing happened

can someone help me get the exe opening?

Linux support

Whenever I run Binary Waterfall through Wine, it just gives me an error. So, I suggest there should probably be Linux support.

License?

I probably should ask this before putting my PR #4, but would you be willing to place this program under an established open source license, e.g. GPL?

GPLv3 seems like a good choice, but I don't particularly mind if you prefer something else.

Can't find a specify file

This only happens when exporting only the audio file and displays the error indicated on the screenshot

Pull program from sale or make it donationware

Look, we have a problem. Pre-compiled versions are not freeware; however, its source code is PUBLICLY AVAILABLE on a GitHub repo (which is this one) which undermines your ability to even sell it as now crackers can just crack the software themselves or release a keygen. Unless you have obfuscated the activation code or implemented anti-consumer DRM, there is no way of stopping this. So, what's the point in selling it when people are just going to leverage the fact you put the source code up to crack your software? I see only two ways of going forward:

  1. Pull the software from sale, or make the program donationware (this is the best option)
  2. Retract the programs source code and make it proprietary commercial software (and then worry about Razor 1911)

I suggest you make it donationware. Under a donationware license model, you still get paid for the software and you won't have to worry about piracy - this defeats the point of watermarks and license keys as now they are no longer necessary.

Out of memory

When tried in cmd using: binary-waterfall.exe -f E:\Downloads\Sashley_-_XD_MEME__Collab_-_Danidanijr__Orangepaprika_67\xd.mp4, it just says:

Computing audio... Traceback (most recent call last): File "binary-waterfall.py", line 294, in <module> pygame.error: Out of memory [15124] Failed to execute script 'binary-waterfall' due to unhandled exception!

P.S. i'm not a coder so idk how to fix that
Also, is it because on C:\ I have 2,26 GB of free space?
