lyt-mode's Introduction

lyt-mode-graphic

LYT Mode

LYT Mode is for "Linking Your Thinking".
It invokes sensemaking and lateral thinking.
This is where I do my sensemaking: in LYT Mode.
LYT actually stands for: "Linking Your Thinking" Mode.
It's meant to encourage sensemaking and lateral thinking.
For me, I do both my creative and analytical work in LYT Mode.

Enjoy!
Nick

Why Use LYT Mode?

When a theme puts extra emphasis on making its formatting elements distinct (like bold and italics), it has a better chance at improving sensemaking.

This is because the more visually striking an image is, the more the user has to latch onto. Thinking and learning shift from being so abstract (words only). Instead, they more deeply engage the senses.

Each visually distinct word or phrase acts as another piece of an ever-evolving scaffolding from which we simultaneous shape and extract meaning.

And that is why my favorite theme is LYT Mode (the evolution of Cybertron).

How to Use LYT Mode

Make sure you're in dark mode. I know, it's ironically called "LYT" mode.

Features

  1. Evolved color palette from Cybertron comparison
    • Special Colors for Markdown Emphasis
  2. Beautiful readable fonts originally made for each other: DM Sans & DM Mono
  3. Support for both Mobile and Desktop
  4. Support for all Obsidian views: Legacy, Live Preview, and Reading
  5. Custom Icons
  6. Minimal animation for more focused work
  7. LYT Mode Syntax Highlighting
  8. Tighter Sidebar Line Height** spacing to allow you to see more notes, tags, and links
  9. Grayed out Markdown Formatting (except for headers)
  10. Bigger Popovers
  11. Design Support for Callouts
  12. Support for Slides
  13. Support for Publish

Supported Plugins

LYT Mode should work with most plugins but this list shows plugins given extra love or design support.

  • Calendar by Liam Cain
  • Dataview by Michael Brenan
  • Hover Editor by nothingislost
  • Excalidraw by Zsolt Viczian
  • Kanban by mgmeyers

Other Stuff

Icon Bullets

LYT Mode also offers additional syntax for Icon Bullets (aka Alternative Checkboxes). These act like bullet journaling “legends”.

lyt-mode's Issues

Indent files in the directory tree

It would be nice if the files in the directory tree are indented as well. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish them from the folders.

Here how it looks like on cybertron:

Highlighting showing up as dull yellow

Hi Nick,

I downloaded LYT mode off the community themes but it isn't doing the pretty white glow highlighting that you showcased in the YouTube video.

H3 Contrast

I love the theme and it is my favorite hands-down! My only issue was with H3 blending in with the standard text color.

I spent a little time on it and came up with this...
LYTHeaders

Since I know so little of CSS, I made this change direct to the theme files in the following way...

--color-cyan-gradient-3: linear-gradient(180deg, #38a2ff, #33a0ff, #2e9aff, #2997ff, #2492ff, #1f8fff, #1e8cfa, #1e86f6);

--color-cyan-540: hsl(210, 100%, 56%);

You know you could do better than I did with the colors if you like the general direction I went with this.

Overall, I really like how this turned out.

Thanks again,

Curtis

PDF rendering differs depending on 'Dark Mode' or 'Adapt to System'

Hi,
I'm on MacOS with the latest versions of Obsidian and theme.
If I choose for "Base color scheme" = Dark mode, I got a PDF with shadows on headings.
If I choose for "Base color scheme" = Adapt to system, which is Dark mode on my Mac, I got a PDF with black headings and no shadow.

I tested with few other themes and this difference between PDFs does not occur. So it appear to me that it is related to the Lyt Mode them.

Any clue would be greatly appreciated.

Feat: Support data-task bullets

Support for data-task bullets, as implemented in Minimal, Primary, etc, would be much appreciated.

Here's how it's implemented in Minimal theme:

Inputs in extesions are too long

The screenshot below is the Vantage plugin. The input for the word I'm trying to add to the search is far too long and pushes the buttons off the page.

For context, same screen with the default theme.

Similar idea for the Kanban plugin and it's search field.

Richer formatting for Dataview properties

I love this theme. I have started using Dataview and it looks like there is support for custom formatting. I would love for the inline fields to pop a little more. When adding data before I was using headers which obviously won't work for Dataview queries. Even Key:: Value doesn't really stand out as much. Maybe a custom icon for "::" like you have for the checkboxes, or formatting to makes it easier to distinguish between Key:: and Value.

Title & some headers difficult to see in PDF exports

I love how the theme looks in dark mode, but when I export to PDF, headers 1, 2, and 3 are difficult to see in the exported pdf.

It looks like a shadow is being applied, which helps a bit, but not enough (IMO). I know Cecilia modifies the exported text in Primary to make it black on pdf exports - maybe something similar here?

I've attached an example of an exported PDF.

Problem with Obsidian Sync

When obsidian sync is updating the vault the icon changes until it is up to date.
When that happens the bar at the bottom gets a few pixels bigger and goes back to its original size when they are done updating.
This wouldn't a problem if obsidian sync only updates a few times but obsidian sync updates a lot so your vault is constantly twitching a bit.

[Preferred Mode] Red-links on headers invisible. And links on headers don't have any differentiation

The preferred mode is excellent, but the rendering of links on headers has some bugs.

The following raw text is the test case:

# Test File

## [[Link Present File]] | Plain Text
## [[Link not present]] | Plain Text

In Safe mode (this one is bug-free):
Screen Shot 2022-09-24 at 8 11 39 AM

In Preferred mode:
Screen Shot 2022-09-24 at 8 11 54 AM

Bugs in preferred mode:

  • Red links go invisible
  • Links to a file present are indistinguishable from plaintext.

Environment details: MacOS, Obsidian 15.9, latest Lyt-mode version (as of today).

Headers with 3 Hashtags

Headers with 3 Hashtags universally changed color from light blue to yellow in LYT mode theme. How can I change it all back to the original color? Thanks! #49

Scrollbar big bug

There is a problem in sliding panes (Andy's mode) with the scrollbar of the note. For me that i use long notes, i usually don't scroll them with the mouse, but i click on the scrollbar and i drag it up and down. The problem is that with this theme the scrollbar is very buggy, it's often much thinner then it should be, and if you open many notes it will often disappear.
This bug apparently seems to be accentuated when clicking on a pane instead of scrolling them from left to right.
At first i thought it was a problem of mine, but i saw it on your video too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZC7FAOSjkU&t=609s&ab_channel=LinkingYourThinking
At min 6:00 - 6:10 you can clearly see it, especially at 6:10 when you click on the "thinking moc" note, there is no scrollbar at all

Indicate by color that a heading is in a comment block

My request is to indicate by color that a heading is in a comment block in a similar way as is done with regular test. This would be a useful visual reminder for the user that the content is hidden from view in preview mode.

Here is a screen shot that shows the difference ( in Live Preview Mode ) between regular text and commented text as well as the similarity between regular headings and commented headings.

No Margin Padding

I am not sure if margin padding is the correct term, but below is a screen shot of the issue. This occurs when I am in the reading view with 4 notes open in a 2x2 grid.

LYT Reading View - Text Starts at the very left of the window

LYT Edit View - Text has a bit more space but is still close the the left edge

For Comparison here are the same screen shots but with the Things Theme.

Exported PDF Not Clear

Hi,
First of all, I'd like to say thanks for making this wonderful theme!
I find it very clean and it really helps me to focus.

To the matter now,
An exported PDF doesn't look so good because:

  • H4, H5 and H6 went wrong.
  • Quote block is really dark.
  • Highlighted text is too bright.
  • Latex blocks are too bright.
  • Checklist squares are too dark (although some might think differently here).

@ceciliamay, do you have any future plans to change how the exported PDF looks?
Thanks :)

Problem with creating and editing text in Excalidraw notes

When putting text inside of an Excalidraw block, the text is initially shown somewhere more on the right then its real location, which is kinda annoying especially if the block has centered text inside (instead of alligned on the left side) because, when editing it, the text is shown way more further on the left. I don't know where can this bug come from, but previoulsy i was using the Cybertron theme and it wasn't like this.

Cannot select text

I have an intermittent issue when using this theme where I cannot select some text with my mouse. Even if I double-click the word, the text does not get selected and the cursor does not move. I have ruled out possible issues with plugins by disabling all plugins. This issue was resolved by switching to another theme.

Checkbox line spacing is big for some people, anyone else?

(From bonnie gray on Youtube)
LOVE this theme, Nick. It's great. I've applied it and am using it happily. I didn't know that you could create checkboxes to check to-dos off, though! Weirdly, with the LYT theme my spacing between checkbox lines is not tight like yours is here. It's quite spaced apart, which is putting me off using it. Any ideas? Everything else has fantastic tight spacing.

Create issues template

Hello again, thanks creating this theme and for all of the recent improvements. It's only because I'm enjoying using it so much that I make the time to create these issues.

I'd like to suggest that you create an issues template to encourage users to initially provide you with a level of detail that will allow you to take action without additional questions on your part.

This could include prompts asking for:

  • Encountered behaviour
  • Expected behaviour
  • What edit mode the user is seeing the issue in.
  • What version of the theme they are using ( with instructions on how to check )
  • Screenshots

This repo may be a valuable resource if you choose to implement a template.

Cheers.

Long headings are partially hidden on iPad

IMG_1058

As you cannot see, when I have a long heading, LYT-mode shows only the first words. It occurs especially on edit mode. I believe this issue is related to another one: highlighted words also get invisible on iPad.

Strange cursor behaviour when navigating up and down when dataviews and tables are in the same note

Hi Nick,

I initially described my issue in the obsidian forum, before I realised, that it must have something todo with the LYT Mode theme:
https://forum.obsidian.md/t/dataview-leads-to-problems-with-cursor-navigation-when-using-embeded-images/57150/3?u=siliasos

Here is a copy&paste of my post in the obsidian forum:
Hi guys,

I experience some strange cursor behaviour, when using dataviews and embeded images in the same note.

To show what happens, I recorded a video, see link here 1

What you will see:

with activated dataview:
=> when I want to navigate with my keyboard from line 15 to line 16, the cursor directly jumps a few lines more…

without activated dataview:
=> it jumps one line after another…

I read the tipps of @rigmarole in this post:

Thanks for making a video! After disabling plugins, make sure to restart Obsidian so they unload properly. Did you also update your themes, and test with the default theme and no custom CSS snippets? What is your Obsidian installer version? It used to be that 0.15.9 was the last supported installer. But now, 1.1.9 also updated to the latest Electron. So if you haven’t, please try downloading and reinstalling Obsidian. The auto-updater can’t update that part of itself. Release notes: Obsidian …
… and updated my themes.

I did not yet download the new installer, because I’m afraid, that all my settings will be overwritten… - or will my settings be kept in the .obsidian-folder and I will have the same settings after reinstalling?

-------------------------------------------------- And here my second post ---------------------------------------------------
Hi Rigmarole,

Thank you for your reply. I have reinstalled Obsidian, but the strange behavior persists.
But as I changed my theme from “LYT Mode” to "Default, there strange cursor behaviour was gone.

With “LYT Mode” theme I experience the same issue when including tables in notes that also have dataviews.

Maybe there’s also a correlation between strange line numbers in the “LYT Mode” theme, see here:

LYT Mode theme:
image

Default theme:
image

As you can see in the attached images, the line numbers in the LYT Mode theme are not at the right place.

I’ll also point the developer to that issue.

Thanks for your advise anyways!

Hide frontmatter metadata box

Hi, many thanks for sharing the theme!

I only have a minor qualm, which is that the theme does not respect Settings > Editor > Show frontmatter. It shows a Metadata box despite this toggled off.I suppose it's because it is consider a feature of the theme. However, is there some way this can be hide completely, or maybe just for specific notes? For the metadata I have, most of the time it's obvious and seeing it disturbs the clean view a bit.

Wikilinks color bleeding over to adjacent letter

As shown in the screenshot, in [[future-proof]]ing where there is no space after the closing brackets, and the next letter gets the same color as the link.

Render quoted code block in live preview mode

Hello again,

In live preview mode please render a code block that is quoted in the same way as in-line code.

Here is some example content

>Some quoted text
>`in-line code`
>Some additional quoted text

>Some quoted text
>```
>code block
>```
>Some additional quoted text

Here is how it is rendered in live preview mode

CleanShot 2022-02-10 at 12 19 30

I have updated to the most recent version.

Mobile: Live Preview Checkboxes

Any news on when Live Preview Checkboxes will be available in the mobile app version of the theme, as exists in the default Obsidian theme. Thanks.

Usage with Excalidraw: Tools Panel Mouse Dragging: floats to right bottom screen

Dear Nick!

Thank you for your great contributions to Obsidian and it's usage!

Zsolt updated Excalidraw to Version 1.6.1. Since then, there is an issue when using the LYT-Mode
When using Excalidraw and opening the Tools Pandel and click-moving it with the Mouse, the panel moves to the right, bottom direction of the screen.

To Reproduce

  1. With Excalidraw Plugin and the LYT-Mode theme
  2. Open a new Excalidraw Drawing and click on the Tools Panel
  3. Try clicking on the 3 stripes on the panel top and moving the panal around
  4. When moving the mouse, the panel will tend moving to the bottom right direction

Attached you find a Screencast showing the issue.

OS including version: Win11
Obsidian version: v0.13.23
Excalidraw version: 1.6.1

Best regards, Thomas

PDF Mode

LYT Mode is beautifully designed for Dark Mode, but when you attempt to make a PDF of the documents for study purposes, the PDF saves with a white background. Given that you would likely be printing a PDF on a white sheet of paper, that makes sense. However, the same color palette that works for Dark Mode is a bit hard to read when the background is white (especially the shadowing on the title headers, for example). Can there be a PDF mode that allows you to switch between PDF/light mode compatible aesthetics?

Thank you so much, and thank you again for this great theme!!
