home's Issues

Stairs into backyard

The existing stairs are laid pieces of wood, and they get slippery and are crooked.

Gary is interested in helping with this, but we should use real stairs, and I'd prefer to come down the part of the hill near the side of the house instead of the middle - then we can have a landing, and continue the stairs up the hill around the side.

Climbing garden

1x4 trough garden with 4 feet of trellis above them, out in the sunny area. We may want more than one, but let's wait on that issue until we see how we like it.

Fix dining set chair(s)

The peg broke in at least one of the dining room chairs. This should be fixable by removing the top of the chair and replacing the peg, but use something stronger this time - oak dowel would be good.

Squat rack in the basement

I have a barbell and weights, but no rack - I could use a cheap metal squat-rack, but I think it would be reasonably easy to build one myself, attached to the ceiling/wall out of 2x4.

Kitchen Backsplash

Right now it's exposed drywall, not very attractive. We want to cover this with aluminum flashing panels, slightly overlapped, attached with liquid nails.

Replace or fix tiles above backsplash

the tiles below the window are missing, and the tile stops suddenly, because the counter used to come up to meet it.

We need to do something, either remove the tiles entirely or replace the tiles and grout the bottom edge.

Adjustable height excercise bars in basement

While we were at the school, we did some exercises that were link diagonal pull-ups and push-ups on the low bars. We ought to be able to create a place to do those in our basement without too much trouble?

Hot tub

There's nowhere to put one of these right now, but a hot tub is something we've always wanted. We should probably install it on the extended porch - perhaps around the side of the house, with a metal roof?

Replace kitchen floor

With something. Possible ideas so far are:

  • tile (not sure it would hold up on such a flexible floor)
  • Plywood (not sure it would look good)
  • vinyl (sure it would not look good)
  • bamboo (not sure it would hold up well)
  • hardwood (expensive, needs sealing)

Replace/expand the back deck

It's not well-built, and is starting to come apart a bit. We can do better, and we can make it bigger.

In particular, I'd like it to extend around the side of the house, at least as a walkway, probably with a little second porch for sitting over there.

It should have posts for stringing lights, and we should consider tin-roofing part of it.

Openable window or exhaust fan in loft

In the summer, the loft can get unlivable - there's no way to exhaust the heat from the top of that room, and the open floor plan and massive windows mean we get a lot of heat.

Either an openable window (that a box fan could fit into) or straight-up exhaust fan would solve the problem - I think a window that swings open over the other roof (behind the desks) would be ideal.

Pull-down ladder for attic

Currently it's basically unused because we have to carry a painters ladder to the hole to get in.

We need either a retracting ladder or fold-down stairs.

Baby-proof the loft

Need to attach cloth to the railing so that Echo can't fall through it, and install a serious gate at the top of the stairs.

New Dishwasher

The existing one is original to the house, and doesn't clean dishes all. Also, many of the verticals are rusty on the end, and are staining our dishes.

Fireplace support is damaged

As a result of the chimney box leaking for 30 years (and a fireplace that weighs way more than it ought), the support at the bottom of the chimney had rotted and caved backwards perceptibly.

It needs replaced/reinforced support, and to be jacked back into position.

Encase front window supports

The front windows are set in cedar beams, which started to rot before we moved in. The temporary solution was to GreatStuff it, and paint that green, but it's pretty ugly.

A longer term answer (short of replacing the whole wall) is to encase the existing wood with new wood, and waterproof and paint that. Some of it is very high, but the worst part is low down, and reachable with a painters ladder.

Clean and organize the garage

I have a lot of crap in there. I need more shelves, more hooks, more bins, and I need to sort it all out, and find places for everything.

Replace front windows

Two windows are fogged, one is cracked. This may need to wait on additional support for the cantilevered front wall.

Built-in desks in loft

Ikea butcherblock? One desk at adult height, another at child levels - plenty of work space for art or anything else.

Roof leaks near chimney

There's plaster damage, and it apparently drains down the chimney box, because the wood at the bottom is in really bad shape.

Compost bin

Need to learn about composting still, but good dirt is expensive, and composting is better for the environment than trashing.

Gravel the fire circle

Put down sheet plastic and gravel next time we clear the plants out, to keep them from returning.

Woodpile is exposed

I'd like a covered woodpile in the front corner outside the house, where we can keep split wood dry.

Fire circle benches

Once we have it cleared and covered in gravel, it would be nice to have solid benches down there, and maybe an end-table. Concrete and 4x4 construction.

Replacing side door of garage

it's particle-board that's gotten wet. The drain spout above seems to run water down across the door, so whatever we put here needs to be able to handle water better than this one did, at least until we fix the drain.

While we're replacing the door, we should put a cat-door in it.

Replace garbage disposal

Sink is leaking at the disposal, which no longer turns on. It's really old, it's time to replace it.

Electrical socket behind bed

The falling rabbit painting damaged that socket plate - it's covered with electrical tape at the moment, but the socket and plate both need replacing.

Finish basement room into home office

As I shift to more working at home, I need to have a separate space for which to do so.

The windowless room will do nicely - it can have a desk, chair, lamps, computer + screens (Linux), and a bookshelf. Possibly a work table for computer stuff also?

We will need to run an Ethernet cable down there - it might make sense to have a router down by the AT&T box, since there's already a line drop there.

Built-in bookcase below stairs to loft

This should probably involve also adding a reinforcing pillar to the loft stairs, but we want deep shelves below the stairs.

A possible idea is to have a box on the end of the shelves the stairs are on, which would hold books facing out through the stairs.

Finish basement bedrooms

paint the walls, add drop-ceilings, improve lighting. The dungeon room needs a window added, which is probably the larger part of the effort.
