Yurivania: Uhaul of the Night 🌱🐍

This is my entry to YuriJam 2020: an adventure game with a metroidvania style.

Stheno the gorgon wants her girlfriend Alraune to move in, but to accommodate a plantgirl Stheno's room needs an overhaul! Hopefully their castle community can provide everything they need to make the space comfy for both of them!

Explore the Midnight Palace, ask your girlfriends and other monstergirls for help, and make the perfect two-lady lovenest! You might have to avoid some nasty traps or trounce a creepy human along the way, but in the end love always wins!

I wanted to create something cute, simple, and gay over the course of the two month jam. I liked the idea of working with a toolset I'd never used before. I chose a system with significant technical constraints, as fewer choices mean faster development.

Ladybug fails when used.

Ladybug doesn't stop the aphids.
This is game-breaking if you don't exploit a sequence break.

Request: Physics and Control Adjustments

A player said: "I personally wish jump and run were switched, and the biggest issue I had with the physics was that the fall speed makes the character feel really heavy suddenly"

These seem like easy fixes!

Softlock on Lore Screen

Sometimes the game can get stuck in a loop on the Lore screen,
where after reading a lore entry the same entry will instantly load again.
It is possible to break out of this by rapidly moving away from the entry,
but it's a pain. For whatever reason it seems to only happen at the bottom of the list.

Music stops.

Music stops playing temporarily if you fall down from the area below the bridge.

Request: More Direction

Several players have asked for more direct hints from the characters about where to go. Tiamat's location and how to beat the human are good examples.

Buggy human encounter.

The human encounter is a bit buggy.
I haven't been able to isolate the issues here just yet; however, compare #7 .

This aligns with de facto standard Game Boy button layout.

Jade Mask fails when used.

The Jade Mask doesn't seem to be working.
Although not game-breaking, this prevents access to some of the map.

Music file warnings.

Warnings to do with the music files are emitted during build, but the music seems to play fine....

Softlock in Subterrane

A player reports: "The softlock happened in the underground cave. The falling rocks glitched and now they're stuck in the air so there is no way to get out of the cave."

Spelling and grammar errors.

There are a fair number of typos in the dialogue.

  • glass => glassy (Kuliltu lore)
  • surpasingly => surpassingly (Jade mask desc)
  • crany => cranny
  • ever => every on baphy lore

There's probably more.

cannot use items in Subterrane

(I'm using firefox 89.0 on linux, but it probably shouldn't matter)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. enter any area marked "Subterrane" on the map, up to and including the bit where you have to help Alraune's sprout.
  2. make sure you have ANY item selected
  3. press enter to use the item

Expected behaviour: some text appears telling you what the item did, and, if applicable, there is some effect on the world

Actual behaviour: nothing happens - not even flavour text

Improve Ending

The ending sequence is missing an animation, and in general could use a little work.

Request: Jump SFX

Sound effects to indicate jumping would be helpful.
I'm not sure if this can be done with the current engine, so this might have to be a "won't fix" -- look into it!

Wind glitches.

The wind in the tower is a bit glitchy.
Rarely, you can get stuck in the wall.

Request: ROM Download

It would be good to have a downloadable rom version.
This primarily just requires a build.

Baphy sprite glitch.

Baphy's sprite glitches if you open a menu screen while atop the great big green glowing pyramid.

Improve project cleanliness.

It would be nice to clean up the project some to aid anyone coming here to learn more about GB Studio.
Primary ideas:

  • Improve variable naming. This should be easy.
  • Improve variable ordering. This might be quite hard.
  • Merge the two pattern tables into one. See if Tiled can do this automatically.

Premature key access.

It's possible to sequence break by jumping up to the key ledge with a running start.
