legal-docs's Introduction

Mozilla Legal Documents

Reference Linter

L10n Linter

This repository contains legal documents and their applicable translations. Each subdirectory represents a single legal document. Within a document directory is a series of markdown files, each named for the language the document is written in. For instance, firefox_privacy_notice/de.md is the German version of the Firefox privacy policy.

Editing

Legal Team

If you're a member of the legal team, it's easy to get started. First, make sure you're logged in with your GitHub account. When you have a change which you wish to make, simply find the en-US.md version of the document that you wish to change. Open it and press the Edit button. If you have never gone through this process before, you will be asked to "fork" the repository (you should).

On the edit page, you'll be presented with a "raw" version of the legal document. Edit the text you wish to change. When you are done editing, there will be a section at the bottom of the page to save your work. Under "Commit summary", enter a brief (tweet-length) description of the change(s) you're making. In the "Extended description" field, explain what the changes are and why they're needed. When you're done, commit your changes.

At this point, you'll be presented with a form to submit a pull request. The bottom section of the page will show all of the change you've made to the document, and all you should need to do is press the "Send Pull Request" button.

Once you've submitted a pull request, your colleagues can review the work under the Pull Requests tab on the right-hand side, and a contributor to the repo can merge your changes.

Markdown

These files are written in the Markdown syntax. In some languages, the date format contains dots like 15. travnja 2014. but this may end up as an ordered list according to the syntax. The workaround is using a backslash to escape a dot after the leading digit(s) like 15\. travnja 2014.

Some Markdown files use the Attribute Lists extension of the Python Markdown library. This is useful when you'd like to set the ID or class of an element, but the extended syntax may cause an error if your parser doesn't support this extension.

PDF

A subset of documents is converted to PDF format via automation. Each localized PDF document is saved in a pdf subfolder within the locale folder.

Localization

Localization of these documents is managed through an external vendor. As a localizer, you're encouraged to find and fix translation issues. All document translations should match the precise meaning in the corresponding en version of the document. Additionally, we're always interested in finding errors in markup, broken links, etc.

File a pull request that updates your locale's markdown file to match the en version as closely as possible. When you're done, submit a pull request. Someone at Mozilla will review your changes. If there are no problems, your changes will be merged.

Important: we won't be accepting brand new translations for existing documents, only fixes to existing ones.

A summary of the localization status is available here, with a list of localized and non localized documents.

Package.json

Firefox Accounts relies on package.json to import this repository through npm and convert specific documents to HTML.

Getting changes to production

For www.mozilla.org, the process is as follows:

  1. Check the documents to be published on the staging site and make sure they look right:
  2. Open this link to access the Actions tab in the repo on the Publish Documents to Production workflow. Screen Shot 2022-03-25 at 09 35 53
  3. There will be a banner that says "This workflow has a workflow_dispatch event trigger." and, next to it on the right, a button that says Run Workflow. Click this button. Screen Shot 2022-03-25 at 09 36 14
  4. A form should now open with a field for a list of "files to publish". The default value is ALL. If you change nothing and click the Run workflow button, all changes to all files will be included in the pull request that is opened. If that is not what you want, you can enter file names in this field. It can be a comma separated list of filenames (e.g. mdn_plus_terms.md, mdn_plus_privacy.md), or you can use the * character to include all files with a prefix (e.g. mdn_plus_*).
  5. Click Run workflow.
  6. It may take a few seconds, but the running workflow will show up on the screen with an animated progress indicator. Screen Shot 2022-03-25 at 09 38 40
  7. Once this is finished, and everything was successful, a new Pull Request should have been opened with all of the requested changes.
  8. Review this Pull Request. It will have the title [prod] Publish document updates.
  9. Once you are satisfied that the correct changes have been included, merge the Pull Request and the changes will be published to the website within a few minutes.

URL Inventory

Following is a list of directories in this repository and either their URL counterparts on the web or directions to see the document in case it isn't easily linkable. The URLs below will link to the English (US) versions of the document but replacing en-US in the URL with an available language code will show alternative languages.

Generally speaking Privacy Notice documents will be at https://www.mozilla.org/privacy/ and Terms documents at https://www.mozilla.org/about/legal/.

legal-docs's Issues

Reward link points to site in Indonesian

@chianger the legal doc for #1384 points to Indonesian site, even though the doc is in non-id languages. Do you have other URLs we can use? This is not going to be good user experience.

I have a series of legal docs to update. I will merge them but the link needs to be updated unless it is intended to be in Indonesian.

Docs used on www.mozilla.org using unsupported language code

On bedrock (www.m.o) we use the hi-IN locale, but the docs in here that we use are named just hi. This seems to be causing some confusion on the site. For example the Firefox privacy notice:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox/

In the footer of that page is a dropdown with all available languages. hi appears in that list, but it doesn't work and redirects to en-US because hi isn't an active language for the site. Manually going to hi-IN also doesn't work since the doc doesn't include a filename with that locale code. I think the solution is to rename hi.md files to hi-IN.md files.

Is this the right way to go in your opinion @peiying2?

Push New Changes

@pmac - I updated the Firefox Privacy Notice to fix a broken link and add a new DNS resolver.

Could you please push this to bedrock. It's not urgent, so tomorrow or Thursday would be fine.

Here's the commit: e257eb8

A couple instances of "Learn More" in the Firefox Cloud Services PrivacyNotice pages

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Visit https://github.com/mozilla/legal-docs/blob/master/firefox_cloud_services_PrivacyNotice/en-US.md

Note: It also happens in the other locales.

Actual results:

You send us different types of data depending on what features of the Services you use. Learn More.
...
We use cookies, clear GIFs and other web technologies to offer and improve our products and services. Learn More.

Those links are just, like, words. If the "more" was intended to refer to the bullets lists that follow, in which case it should either be "Learn more:", or possibly just remove that learn more text altogether.

Expected results:

? Not sure if those should be links, or... yeah, I'm not sure how they were intended to be used.

Previously a PR comment but refiling this as a new issue in case I have a few spare minutes to look into it and submit a PR.

Firefox Cloud Services Legal Docs->privacy policy links to en_US Mozilla Privacy Policy

All of the translated documents in https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mozilla/legal-docs/master/firefox_cloud_services_PrivacyNotice link to the en_US Mozilla Privacy policy instead of the generic policy which will redirect to the user's locale.

From the German document:

Den Schutz Ihrer Daten nehmen wir sehr ernst. Wenn die Firefox Cloud Services (die „Services“) Daten
an Mozilla (an uns) senden, verarbeiten wir diese Daten wie in der [Mozilla-Datenschutzerklärung]
(http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/) beschrieben.

German translation for firefox_cloud_services_PrivacyNotice is confusing

Ref: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/3o34o2/questions_indepth_security_consideration_of_the/?ref=share&ref_source=link

The german version of https://accounts.firefox.com/legal/privacy states "Wenn Sie sich für ein Konto registrieren, erhalten wir Ihre E-Mail-Adresse und Ihr Passwort." saying Firefox will get my email & password in plain text.. This would render the whole security design worthless?!

cliqz privacy notice has a 404

A few Mozzila typos

I found a few other typos of "Mozzila" in the legal-docs repo:

$ grep -irn "mozz" .
  1. ./firefox_cloud_services_ToS/cs.md:34:

Markdown issues w/ WebRTC_PrivacyNotice links

In /WebRTC_PrivacyNotice/en-US.md (and presumably other locales) it looks like we have some invalid markdown. Note the space in the link below (betweenst [here] and (https://...)):

 click [here] (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox-cloud/).

Some markdown processors may be smart enough to correct that for you (GitHub.com seems to be pretty clever), but other parsers such as npm's marked and whatever we're using on https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox-hello/ isn't so clever (note the following unparsed output):

To learn more about how data is used by Firefox Accounts, click [here] (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/firefox-cloud/).

A few relative links in /marketplace_developer_agreement/ and /marketplace_terms_of_use/

Inspired by #186, I wrote a crude Markdown->HTML converter script in Node and then ran a link checker on legal-docs and found a bunch of relative links in /marketplace_developer_agreement/ and /marketplace_terms_of_use/ that are relative so were failing for me locally.

Not a huge deal, but means that the markdown isn't super reusable.

All the other broken links were reported in #186 and were http://corp.everything.me/ffos-privacy/ specific.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to /marketplace_developer_agreement/en-US.md
  2. Ctrl+F and search for "](/" (without quotes).
    You should get 3 results:
    1. [Terms of Use](/media/docs/terms/en-US.html)
    2. [Privacy Policy](/media/docs/privacy/en-US.html)
    3. [available here](/media/docs/pay-providers/all.html?v1)
  3. Go to /marketplace_terms_of_use/en-US.md
  4. Ctrl+F and search for "](/" (without quotes).
    You should get 4 results:
    1. [Firefox Marketplace privacy policy](/media/docs/privacy/en-US.html)
    2. [Privacy Policy](/media/docs/privacy/en-US.html)
    3. [Privacy Policy](/media/docs/privacy/en-US.html)
    4. [Privacy Policy](/media/docs/privacy/en-US.html)

So for each locale, that is 7 "broken" links. Again, not a huge issue if the legal docs aren't used in multiple places, but thought I'd point it out. #ifyouseesomethingsaysomething

A couple bad Markdown links in ./marketplace_*/mk.md docs

Inspired by #211 (comment)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. git clone and grep:
$ grep -rIn "] " . | grep -v ".git/"

Actual results

  1. ./marketplace_developer_agreement/mk.md:38:

A few incorrect dates (thanks Markdown!)

I casually noticed this while working on a different PR, so did a bit of grepping...

$ egrep -irn '^\d+\.\s' . | grep "\.md:1:"

./marketplace_developer_agreement/cs.md:1:30. října 2013
./marketplace_developer_agreement/de.md:1:30. Oktober 2013
./marketplace_developer_agreement/hr.md:1:30. listopada 2013.
./marketplace_terms_of_use/cs.md:1:3. července 2013
./marketplace_terms_of_use/hr.md:1:3. srpnja 2013.
./marketplace_terms_of_use/sr.md:1:3. jul 2013

Note that these are dates, but start with a number, then period then space, then "stuff".
Markdown likes to think of these as a numbered list, so it blows away your "day" and sets it to "1.", because Markdown.

You can look through the rendered Markdown for each of those results and see that the days are getting lost. Not a big deal, but may be worth tweaking if we want accurate dates for these specific locales.

In theory, this should be easy as 3\. jul 2013 to bypass Markdownification.

Add a "span" tag around "Learn More" text in FxA Privacy Notices?

Re: /firefox_cloud_services_PrivacyNotice/en-US.md,

There are a couple "Learn More" strings in that file which are kind of awkward when reading our hosted privacy notice: https://accounts.firefox.com/legal/privacy

It'd be nice if the "Learn More" strings (and in all the translations) could be wrapped in a <span class="toggle">...</span> tag or something to make them easier to style/hide via CSS or convert into some sort of toggle control. This gets trickier when we have to manage the "Learn More" translations in 25+/- different locales.

Interestingly, if I switch to $ grep -irl "http://" . | wc -l I get 132 results.
It looks like we have 3 links which use http://mozilla instead of www.mozilla.

Ah, it looks like we have ~70 links to http:// that AREN'T "mozilla.org": $ grep -r "http://" . | grep -v "mozilla.org" which point to links like:

The last result seems odd, considering it's coming from this HTML file:

./marketplace_developer_agreement/hu.html:405: hu.md - Generated on Tue Feb 25 08:59:51 PST 2014 by clouserw using Markdown. Source is embedded.

A bunch of localized legal-docs point to English versions of things

Similar to #153, but since I was grepping anyways, I thought I'd write some disgusting bash shell scripts to try and find all instances of "/en-us/" in non "en-US.md" files.

It's not pretty, but probably roughly accurate.

TL;DR: Basically we have /firefox_cloud_services_ToS/it.md which has the following contents:

L'informativa sulla privacy nella pagina Firefox Cloud Services descrive...

The Italian doc is pointing to an /en-US/ page instead of an Italian translation. It should probably be normalized to http://www.mozilla.org/privacy/firefox-cloud/ without the locale in the URL.

UPDATE (Oct 18, 2017): Here's a list of recent files with "en-US" (minus files in "marketplace_" and "firefox_os_"):

Create a single bn (Bengali) version

@pmac the two Bengali communities (bn-BG, bn-IN) have agreed to combine effort to localized all products and webpages into a single Bengali version. Legal documentations is part of this effort. It is a blocker for the mozilla.org merge as well.

Currently, the two versions in the repo share the same content. We should create a bn folder for any docs we have one or both locales represented. After it is set up, we wait for mozilla.org to be ready and push of both them to production at the same time.

You explain what, how and when, but sometimes not "why"…

In your privacy policy you are great at explaining how and when you collect data, but sometimes you miss the "why" at all you collect this type of data. (And no, I don't mean the general statement: "to improve our services")

Which was striking to me was the example is e.g. why my mail address is sent to "SalesForce Marketing Cloud" when using Firefox accounts? Why do you send data to advertising companies?

CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md file missing

As of January 1 2019, Mozilla requires that all GitHub projects include this CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md file in the project root. The file has two parts:

  1. Required Text - All text under the headings Community Participation Guidelines and How to Report, are required, and should not be altered.
  2. Optional Text - The Project Specific Etiquette heading provides a space to speak more specifically about ways people can work effectively and inclusively together. Some examples of those can be found on the Firefox Debugger project, and Common Voice. (The optional part is commented out in the raw template file, and will not be visible until you modify and uncomment that part.)

If you have any questions about this file, or Code of Conduct policies and procedures, please reach out to [email protected].

broken link to corp.everything.me/ffos-privacy in firefox_os_privacy_notice/*

While looking at #185 I noticed an issue w/ some of the links in /firefox_os_privacy_notice/fr.md (random example):

... à l'adresse [http://corp.everything.me/ffos-privacy/](http://corp.everything.me/ffos-privacy/) ...

This was a 404 for me when I clicked the link. Not sure what it's supposed to point to, but it ultimately redirects to http://everything.me/ffos-privacy#/ which says:

Whoops!
The page you're looking for doesn't exist.
Visit our homepage

The broken link doesn't seem language specific at all, and seemed to have the same behavior on all the pages I randomly tested.

For giggles, here's a sloppy grep which seeks all references to "everything.me" in the legal-docs repo, which thankfully seems to be contained to the /firefox_os_privacy_notice/ directory:

Remove all /en-US/ links from non en-US pages

via #202 (comment)

I'm proposing that all links should be de-localed so if I happen to be on a bn-BD privacy notice page and click a link, I wouldn't be taken to an en-US privacy policy doc (if a bn-BD translation was potentially available). For example:

[Mozilla গোপনীয়তা নীতি পড়ুন](http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/)

I think those links should just be tweaked to something like this, and let the site handle the redirect based on the user's current locale (or the best fallback, which may be en-US):

[Mozilla গোপনীয়তা নীতি পড়ুন](https://www.mozilla.org/privacy/)

Here was a list of all the files I could find in the legal-docs repo that mention "/en-US/" but weren't an en-US.md file:

Outdated information on addons pane

In the (from the privacy policy linked) site https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/how-to-opt-out-of-add-on-metadata-updates/:

The add-on identifiers are used to […], as well as in aggregate to provide personalized recommendations in the Get Add-ons pane of the Add-ons Manager.

In old Firefox version there was "Recommended for you" part. This is not there anymore. Also AFAIK the about:add-ons page is not personalized anymore. Or is it?

If so I think that should be mentioned in the main privacy policy as it is analyzing data for one personal user and thus not only technical.
Also IMHO one should be able to disable the personalisation of the data while still getting automated add-on updates.

German version of Firefox + Cliqz privacy does not collapse correctly

Looking at https://bedrock-demo-agibson.us-west.moz.works/de/privacy/firefox-cliqz/ the 3rd "learn more" ("mehr erfahren") link seems not quite right.

It reads "Weitere Informationen finden Sie in der Datenschutzerklärung Mehr erfahren von Cliqz. Wenn das Cliqz-Feature aktiviert ist, gilt Folgendes:".

I'd expect: "Weitere Informationen finden Sie in der Datenschutzerklärung von Cliqz. Mehr erfahren"

Then, after clicking on "Mehr erfahren" the following text should appear (together with the rest): "Wenn das Cliqz-Feature aktiviert ist, gilt Folgendes:" [...]

Typo in French legal page chiffrés vs cryptés

Per mozilla/send#1253

Legal page doesn't seem to be taken from this git repo. But anyway:

in Mozilla Send repo, the right French translation is used (files are "chiffrés", not "cryptés"):

./public/locales/fr/send.ftl:introDescription = { -send-brand } vous permet de partager des fichiers chiffrés (...)
./public/locales/fr/send.ftl:notifyUploadEncryptDone = Votre fichier est chiffré (...)

On legal page https://www.mozilla.org/fr/about/legal/terms/services/#send

(e) Firefox Send vous permet de partager des fichiers cryptés

In mozilla/send#1253 (comment), @TheoChevalier adds:

I can confirm “cryptés” is a blatant mistake and that the latest update in the legal-docs repo needs improvements. Right now it’s not adhering to the styleguide, nor using the UI terminology. I can offer some review next week and file an issue upstream
