The problem are the subworkers (universe_slave) created within a worker (simulator), i.e. to HTML5 nested workers. It is a known issue for Chromium, i.e. a problem of the browser itself. Working around it would mean to go back to only using one background worker (back to this revision or to spawn all workers in the same hierarchy. For the latter I'm not sure how the pre-calculation should be realized.

Seems to be related to the canvas 2d implementation of Firefox 24 on Ubuntu, i.e. a problem of Firefox. Working around the problem would mean harshly reducing the number of drawing actions on the canvas.
