This would be a issue in Minetest, since item_place should always return the ItemStack. However it appears to always return the ItemStack properly. Is your version of Minetest up-to-date and unmodified?

We are running the 2014_06_10 unstable release of Minetest, no modification to the engine. The only modification made to "farming" was the removal of the "flammable=2 (or 3)" group so griefers can't burn the crops.
