I agree this needs to be changed. Preserving volume would give 8 stairs from 6 blocks, or alternatively allowing for some wastage from crafting (imagine carving away that 1/4 of block) should give 6 for 6. Only 8 or 6 make any sense to me.

It should output 8, not 6. With 6, you lose some parts of the blocks.
