As an update, it did eventually open after ~2 hours. I'm curious if you have a sense for what the average time is for the initial sample project opening (since it presumably has to compile a bunch of expensive shaders, etc)

No such issue here. New checkout, build & first open: Takes ca 10 minutes to initialize, then a couple of minutes to compile 4000+ shaders. On second open opens instantly. If possible, try to avoid HDD and keep everything on SSD, can make a huge difference.
