sensu-plugins-network-interface's Introduction

Sensu plugin for monitoring network interfaces

A sensu plugin to efficiently monitor network interfaces on Linux allowing to track metrics like speed, duplex, operational status, link carrier etc.

The plugin generates multiple OK/WARN/CRIT/UNKNOWN events via the sensu client socket (https://sensuapp.org/docs/latest/clients#client-socket-input) so that you do not miss state changes when monitoring multiple interfaces + metrics.

Usage

The plugin accepts command line options to specify things like expected mtu, speed, duplex, operstate etc.

Usage: check-network-interface.rb (options)
        --carrier <STATE> Indicates the current physical link state of the interface (default: up)
    -c, --config <PATH> Optional configuration file (default: ./network-interface.json)
        --dryrun Do not send events to sensu client socket
    -d, --duplex <STATE> Check interface duplex settings (default: full)
    -x <INTERFACES>, Comma separated list of interfaces to ignore
        --ignore-interface
    -i, --interface <INTERFACES> Comma separated list of interfaces to check (default: ALL)
        --handlers <HANDLERS> Comma separated list of handlers
    -m, --mtu <MTU> Message Transfer Unit
        --operstate <STATE> Indicates the interface RFC2863 operational state (default: up)
    -s, --speed <SPEED>              Expected speed in Mb/s
    -t, --txqueuelen <TXQUEUELEN> Transmit Queue Length
    -w, --warn Warn instead of throwing a critical failure

Use the --handlers command line option to specify which handlers you want to use for the generated events.

The --interface and --ignore-interface parameters can also accept regular expressions.

When no interface is specified, the plugin will monitor all interfaces that are found under /sys/class/net as well as those set up under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*.

By default, command line option parameters are global to all interfaces. However, each interface can override the defaults either in their ifcfg configuration files (e.g. MTU) or in an optional JSON configuration file which must be placed in the same location as the plugin.

JSON example:

{
  "interfaces": {
    "eth0": {
      "operstate": "down",
      "carrier": "down"
      "duplex": "full",
      "speed": 10000,
      "mtu": 9000,
      "txqueuelen": 10000
    },
    ...
  }
}

Ideally, you would manage the configuration file via your favourite cfgmgmt tool (e.g. Puppet).

sensu-plugins-network-interface's Issues

active-backup interfaces of bonding reported as critical

Let's say you have a bonding
mode=1 (active-backup)
with eth0 and eth1

2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,SLAVE,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq master bond0 state UP qlen 1000
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,SLAVE,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq master bond0 state UNKNOWN qlen 1000
6: bond0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,MASTER,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP

the check reports the bonding as OK
eth0 is active so the check report it as OK
eth1 is backup, so inactive, and the check fails

but this is normal eth1 is inactive.

How can I handle that case ?
This would need to implement some bond logic exceptions ?
like "check at least one of the bonding member is ok if bonding mode=1"
