dmenu's Introduction

Luke's dmenu

Extra stuff added to vanilla dmenu:

  • reads Xresources (ergo pywal compatible)
  • alpha patch, which importantly allows this build to be embedded in transparent st
  • can view color characters like emoji
  • -P for password mode: hide user input
  • -r to reject non-matching input
  • dmenu options are mouse clickable

Installation

After making any config changes that you want, but make, sudo make install it.

dmenu's Issues

Passwords are visible (all of a sudden)

i know that it didn't used to show passwords, probably must update a config.
What i've tried:
in ~/.local/bin/dmenupass , i left only " dmenu -p "$1" <&- " without "&& echo".
since that didnt work, i tried to make the every color black, so it would write black text on black background, ๐Ÿ˜… didnt work either, dmenu would be to intelligent to change the font color.

( to test this i would only run "sudo st" )

colors implementation

Hi, Luke. I found some issue with this fork.
First of all - I have some theme implementation in ~/.Xresources.
If i don't use my theme, implemented with ~/.Xresources, everything working good, but when it is, i can't change some colors at the dmenu.
for example:
dmenu_run -i -nb '#fdf6e3' -nf '#586c75' -sf '#fdf6e3' -sb '#b58900'
only one color implemented with -nb works, other colors don't work.

couple of suggestions

Hi Luke,
I have a couple of suggestions to discuss
First it would be nice to have a "recency/frequency" sorting in dmenu, there are a lot of implementations for this out there, I currently use the manjaro implementation
https://gitlab.manjaro.org/packages/community/dmenu-manjaro
that uses the dmenu_recency script to achieve this but I wanted to know your opinion since I mostly use your scripts and builds.
Another great thing about the manjaro implementation is that it uses a dmenurc config file to pass the colors to dmenu, this doesn't require any patches to dmenu source code so you can pass the gruvbox colors and font modifications to vanilla dmenu, this means you don't need to keep updating the repo and users don't need to check it regularly for updates and instead just update the vanilla dmenu package from Ach repos.
Another cool implementation is https://github.com/kspi/dmenu-frecency

My other suggestion is a clipboard manager based on dmenu, there are many clipboard managers listed on the Arch wiki but a clipboard based on dmenu would be very nice to include in LARBS, my favorite implementation is: https://github.com/kspi/dmenu-frecency

Regards

Why dmenu_run shows no programs at all

image
dmenu_run supposed to show installed programs from the path.
I have $PATH set up correctly and all and before i upgraded to this build of dmenu my dmenu_run were working correctly.

So is this intentionally like this or its a bug?
