The original charm2.pl file extracted distances from stars.dat directly. This makes using the script easier as you don't need startextdump to convert the stars.dat to a heavy text file.

The file charm2.stc in Celestia 1.6.1 reads data from other .stc files in the data directory, such as revised.stc. This gets in a extra stars that would otherwise be missing.

This work was built upon the JMMC Stellar Diameters Catalogue (webpage here) and Gaia DR2, as well as the University of Strasbourg's TAP service. This needs should be made more clear.

Using a variable that you have to manually edit is a bit of a hack. Luckily in Perl there is ARGV which is probably the preferred method for running a script with different options.
