update to BIOS 212 for model x205TA
I bought this tiny laptop last year, I put Debian on it (without any modification it still boot).
But a single month after that, it stopped to boot (random crash and one day, it could not boot anymore), and putting the USB key with Debian could not make it boot at all. I got OpenBSD booting on it, only once.
And today, thank to your guide, it can boot again!
So 40 minutes before, I had one old, noisy and unreliable laptop that I could not bring in class, and now, I also have this small laptop that I can use thank to you!
Thank you a lot!
Hi!
Awesome guide! Very complete and thank you very much for posting it!
I can't seem to get the partitioning right in order to get it to boot though... Could you let me know how you partitioned it?
I did:
EFI: 512MB
EXT4 @ /: ~26GB
SWAP: 4GB
Tried grub on both partitions - no joy.
Tried the auto partitioning -> couldn't install grub.
The install completed fine but no boot device shows up afterwards...
What monumentally stupid thing am I doing wrong?
This cpu is a 64 bit, but the efi is 32 bit. For linux use 64 bit live install and change the efi boot file with 32 bit efi boot.
Can the same be done for windows and somehow use 32 bit efi and 64 bit os
I tried your new bluetooth setup instructions but it didn't work.
Bluetooth still won't work.
What should I do?
Hi,
Command is failing with following fatal error:
[matty@desktop ~]$ git clone https://github.com/plbossart/sound.git -b experimental/codecs
Cloning into 'sound'...
fatal: Remote branch experimental/codecs not found in upstream origin
Please advise some workaround or another possibility for download. Thank you
Hello, I am trying to install linux on a Vensmile. I can get to the Grub screen but I can't find vmlinuz... I found it in /casper but is called vmlinuz.efi. Can't I use that? Also at the next step what to use? /dev/sdb? I made my usb using Rufus. I would appreciate if you could help me. Thank you.
I tried to boot this on an X205TA, and it will not boot up at all. There is an issue with the EFI boot path. I do believe that it should be /boot/efi/ instead of /efi/boot.
Loading the EFI from the BIOS via the command shell portion fails as well.
I have installed this this version for 205ta, but it can't boot after installing.
What should i do ?
Hey, thanks for putting this guide together. Can't wait to get ubuntu working fully on this little guy. Could care less about the keyboard keys but obviously sound and wifi are a must. Any updates on that front in the pas couple months? Thanks!
When compiling "experimental kernel" for X205TA there is a problem with Nuvoton NAU85L40: the compilation is stucked at this particular module (a newly added one?)

Hi,
Thanks for this nice tutorial. It helped me a lot, but I still have a problem while installing grub.
On running this command :
linux (hd1,gpt2)/boot/vmlinuz-3.16-0-23-generic root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 reboot=pci,force
I got the error error: unknown filesystem
Do you have any clues of how to solve this error? Thanks
Hi @lopaka and thank you very much for this.
I've been following ubuntu-16.04-install-asus-x205ta.md step by step (including bluetooth / audio support) but at the end the audio is still not working.
Did I miss something or is it the meaning of experimental?
Finally, what do you mean by "use GUI to set default output" ?
Note: sound settings look like this right now :
Best regards
Hi,
It's not the right place but a big thank you for your instructions, files and patchs.
It works fine (installation and the experimental kernel changes for audio support).
Great work.
💯
Hi,
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it saved my day! Nevertheless, I am having some issue with the webcam which is not detected, installing another kernel like 4.6 solves it, but I cannot have the sound anymore...Do you see any solution to this headache?
Thank you very much
Gaël
I've encountered random system freeze. When it happens, the only solution is to long press the power button to reset ASUS X205TA. I tried to find some solutions from the Internet.
According to the ArchLinux wiki, they had a solution which is add intel_idle.max_cstate=1
in grub settings to remove all the power saving modes.
However there's even a better solution provided by Intel, I found it from here. It disabled all C6 state.
Link to the patch : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=223851
Tried it...No success...Any suggestion?
Following the script and I came across a minor issue if somebody just wanted to execute your script
The program '7z' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt install p7zip-full
Or most probably I'm not able to make it work!
I've followed your guide but I'm not seeing BT available in the connections. Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks a lot,
bye.
I try to follow the script and get the following error message when I run make
cat syminfo.lst | sort | gawk -f ./genmoddep.awk > moddep.lst || (rm -f moddep.lst; exit 1)
grub_reboot in reboot is duplicated in kernel
Makefile:43508: recipe for target 'moddep.lst' failed
Any idea why ?
I have a similar situation as described here, follow your command, I've successfully create a bootable usb. However, when setting the wireless, which is very critical, I don't know how to proceed, your command is:
sudo cp /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/nvram-74b00bd9-805a-4d61-b51f-43268123d113 /lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43340-sdio.txt
sudo modprobe -v -r brcmfmac
sudo modprobe -v brcmfmac
How to change is to my machine? I'm totally a newbie so how do I check something like nvram-74b00bd9-805a-4d61-b51f-43268123d113
and replace it with my specifications? should brcmfmac43340-sdio.txt
be changed too? Please give me some guidance...
