xed's Introduction

Xed Text Editor

build

xed is a small and lightweight text editor.

xed supports most standard editing features, plus several not found in your average text editor (plugins being the most notable of these).

Although new features are always under development, currently xed has:

* Complete support for UTF-8 text
* Syntax highlighting
* Support for editing remote files
* Search and Replace
* Printing and Print Previewing Support
* File Revert
* A complete preferences interface
* Configurable Plugin system, with optional python support

Some of the plugins, packaged and installed with xed include, among others:

* Change Case
* Document Statistics
* File Browser
* Indent Lines
* Insert Date/Time
* Modelines
* Save Without Trailing Spaces
* Sort
* Spell checker
* Tag list
* Word Completion

Installation

    1. run the 'configure' script
      # meson --prefix=/usr build
    2. build xed
      # ninja -v -C build
    3. install xed
      # sudo ninja install -v -C build

    ** Build Instructions for Debian-based distros **
    1. run "dpkg-buildpackage" from the xed base directory
    2. cd ..
    3. run
      # sudo dpkg -i *.deb
    4. From then, any new changes can be applied by running
      # sudo ninja -C debian/build install

xed's Issues

Bug: Mouse wheel allways close last open tab

In firefox/nemo i always use the mouse wheel to close single tabs.
If i try this in xed it always close the last tab not the selected or open ...

Open recent documents

I like xed, but being used to gedit I am missing the feature to open recent documents. It would be very much appreciated if this could be implemented.

Versioning in NEWS question.

Looking at the NEWS, it appears that there are some version discrepancies. It lists up to v 1.13.0, while the latest xed release is 1.0.6.
I checked the pluma/NEWS file and I'm guessing that this was simply copied over and every instance of "pluma" replaced with "xed'. πŸ˜„ Otherwise the two are practically identical.

(It's clearly not a big deal but it threw me for a loop at first... maybe this could be fixed when someone has some spare time?)

Quick acess to text wrap controls

I would like quick access to the word wrap controls. The preferences dialog method is too round-about for a task that sets the readability of the document.

In Window's Notepad, there is a toggle in the menu for text wrap. This is the only feature the program has, and it nails it. Image

In gedit, they finally added a similar the feature in January 2016 as a hidden pop-up (like with the tab options). I find it oddly placed, but it would do the trick. They also brought out the toggles for line numbers, which is nice. Image

It also think it would be a good candidate for the right-click menu.

When find search term is cleared, highlighting persists.

Find function leaves text highlighted with no way to undo the search and un-highlight everything, this is very annoying on a dark theme where the highlighting colors make the found text impossible to read. and generally irritating that the find highlight persists for no reason.

[Bug] smooth scrolling has hard skips/jumps

EDIT: I'm closing this issue because the bug affects gnome-terminal as well and is actually caused by mintlocale picking "xim" as input method instead of "none":
linuxmint/mintlocale#41

Xed does not scroll through all the lines smoothly but skips/jumps every few lines, like so:

  • scrolling smoothly through lines 1-6
  • hard jump to line 10
  • scrolling smoothly through lines 10-15
  • hard jump to line 19

This makes it impossible to slowly scroll through text, line-by-line. It seems like both smooth and hard scrolling are operating at the same time.
Using the scroll bar on the other hand works as expected.

Allow mousewheel to scroll through open document tabs

Feature Request: Allow mousewheel to scroll through open document tabs

currently drag to reposition works, but not scrolling with mwheel

would be intuitive and useful for managing large amounts of documents at the same time

File>Open: Cannot paste full path to file

Am I blind or is this not possible? Sorry to sound critical but that is a show stopper and I'm back to gedit. Surely there's a standard to open dialog boxes? And the ability to type the full path of a file to paste one in is paramount.

Name "xedit" is still dominant in the translation strings (should be: "xed").

In the translation strings for xed, it's still called "xedit". That should of course be "xed".

Furthermore, in the translation strings the first letter of its name isn't capitalized. It would be nicer if the first letter of its name would be a capital, as is customary for GUI apps.

So my proposal would be, to replace "xedit" in all relevant translation strings by "Xed".

./autogen.sh finishes successfully, but running make yields this error dialogue:

After manually finding all the dependencies for autogen.sh, I run into this fatal compiler error:
(I included the output of ./autogen.sh)
Is there a binary or ppa of Xed available? That might actually be more convenient than fishing for dependencies.

Configuration:

Source code location: .
Compiler: gcc
GTK API version: 2.0
Python Plugins Support: no
Spell Plugin enabled: yes
Gvfs metadata enabled: yes
Tests enabled: yes

Now type `make' to compile xed

So you can see that autogen.sh finished successfully. Now I simply type 'make' and the following happens:

So what gives? I'm not sure I really understand the error here at all.
Please make the build process more straightforward. I was unable to find binaries of this program anywhere.

Add code comment plugin

Hi X-apps team,
It possible to add the code comment plugin which was present into gedit ?
Moreover, it is possible to add an option to customize the shortcut of these plugin ?

Many Gtk-2.0 dependencies when building.

For example:

configure: error: Package requirements (
libxml-2.0 >= 2.5.0
glib-2.0 >= 2.36.0
gmodule-2.0
gthread-2.0 >= 2.13.0
gio-2.0 >= 2.26.0
gtk+-2.0 >= 2.24.0
gtksourceview-2.0 >= 2.9.7
) were not met:

No package 'gtksourceview-2.0' found

And after fixing that:

configure: WARNING: No package 'pygobject-2.0' found
No package 'pygtk-2.0' found
No package 'pygtksourceview-2.0' found

Isn't this wrong if the Gtk2 version is dropped?

Cannot Change Accels to "<Primary>Page_Up" or "<Primary>Page_Down"

I'm trying to reassign the
<Actions>/XedWindowActions/DocumentsPreviousDocument and
<Actions>/XedWindowActions/DocumentsNextDocument accels in ~/.config/xed/accels respectively

from <Primary><Alt>Page_Up to <Primary>Page_Up and
from <Primary><Alt>Page_Down to <Primary>Page_Down

but the new key combos do not seem to trigger them. Other key combos (e.g. <Primary>g and <Primary>h) work, though.

Could somebody provide an explanation why this is happening?

Adding number of match amount

Hello.
When you open search window (CTRL + F), and write something to search and press ENTER, the number of match amount is not displayed:
2016-12-23 15-17-17
In Gedit it's present:
2016-12-23 15-21-43
Xed version: 1.0.6
System: Linux Mint 18

I think, that it's very important to know amount of matches with search keyword, not to scroll every time over all document.

Best regards,
Vladislav

Gedit Plugins For XED

With gedit you can install plugins.

I currently have the following installed from the gedit.org :
Bookmarks
Bracket Completion
Change Case
Document Statistics
File Browser Pane
Insert Date/Time
Modelines
Sort
Spell Checker
Tag List

I have also installed gEdit project manager from https://sourceforge.net/projects/gedit-fileset/

And there is one plugin that is only available for gEdit V3 which I would use if I could - gedit-favorites
https://github.com/Quixotix/gedit-favorites

Could these be made available in XED please.

See dialogue with concerned user, appears to be that scripts that assume gedit installed will fail

Very_Agreeable1 xed invalidates all gedit-based online prescriptions, owing to the lack of a symlink of some kind. just let that sink in.
SimonB if you want gedit then just install it from the software manager
Very_Agreeable1 no, i mean that 18 hasn't aliased 'xed' to 'gedit'
Very_Agreeable1 and 'gedit' is a standard part of any such linux prescription available online.
SimonB so just install gedit if that causes a problem, surely ?
Very_Agreeable1 im saying that, if 18 is released without aliasing xed to gedit, it will break a lot of online help and advice, SimonB.
marx is that a current default Very_Agreeable1
Very_Agreeable1 for 18 xed replaces gedit
Very_Agreeable1 and all very laudable
Very_Agreeable1 but
marx ah i c
Very_Agreeable1 if a simple aliasing of 'xed' to 'gedit' doesnt happen....
Very_Agreeable1 boom.
Very_Agreeable1 broken help pages.
marx i see there as well
Very_Agreeable1 broken CLI prescriptions.
Sum1lson18 Very_Agreeable1: blog.linuxmint.com has a Mint18 Beta comments section
Very_Agreeable1 true
marx well a cli that depends on gedit...
Very_Agreeable1 but i pose it here to the great and the good
SimonB Very_Agreeable1: can you give an example of something specific that you think will break ?
Very_Agreeable1 no _marx)
Very_Agreeable1 no marx
marx web pages, forum posts etc Very_Agreeable1
Very_Agreeable1 no CLI would depend upon gedit, it's misguided or disingenuous to suggest it would
Very_Agreeable1 i'm saying
Very_Agreeable1 in the context of an important release
marx web pages, forum posts etc Very_Agreeable1 that refer to gedit
Very_Agreeable1 of a loved and wanted distribution..
Very_Agreeable1 zzzz
SimonB it would be helpful if you could give a specific website, page etc. that you think will fail, or know does, so that it can be checked out
Very_Agreeable1 SimonB: any currently online advice to use bash on mint will fail in 18 where it includes references to 'gedit' over the newer 'xed', as of this beta.

White text with Mint-Y-Dark theme for controls

  • choose Mint-Y-Dark (I have it set for window, icons, controls and panel)
  • activate xed setting "highlight current line"
  • write some text
    -> white text on white background.

Workaround: choose any color scheme but Classic or Tango.

Should the text color in the highlighted line change automatically to get a high contrast or does this work as intended?

Allow promotion of open file to root privileges

I'm sure that I've seen this in other text editors. Once you have opened a file from somewhere as a user, it's a bit of a pain to go back and find it as superuser to edit a root-owned file. Just a switch in a drop down somewhere (tools?) to raise the privileges (which of course then asks for root password) is needed. May not be trivial of course . . .

naming of icon from accessories-text-editor to xed?

Could you change the .desktop file to point to xed icon?
if this file does not exist than fall back to accessories-text-editor...

This file name is used in evolution mail client which breaks the look.
working on Sardi icon set I came across this issue.

Hot keys and text block

It'd be very useful

  1. to have hot keys for switching between upper case/lower case
  2. to assign an arbitrary rectangle text block and be able to cut/copy/paste/move it

I just very recently migrated from Win to LxMint and try to omit Win totally. However, I used EditPad Light very intensively which has the two above useful options. Now, I use XED, which is really excellent. Still I miss these options.

configure still has MATE references

After installing all the Gtk-2.0 stuff to make configure happy, it still doesn't work due to a syntax error:

Shortcut for Text Wrapping

The only Gedit plugin I miss is TextWrap.

I'm asking for this separately from #16 because I don't mind how it is implemented.

Toggling text wrapping is a really useful feature that I use a lot and, at the moment, xed has me regressed to Edit > Preferences > Enable text wrapping checked/unchecked > Close, i.e. 4 clicks vs a one-click toggle icon in the menu bar.

Ideally, a keyboard shortcut would also be enabled.

Thanks.

Bottom panel

G'day mates! This isn't an issue--it's a feature request--so I apologise in advance if this is not the right place to do so.

Anyways, would it be possible to add a bottom panel to xed in the same way that pluma has? I would really love to see it again--I forked one of my favourite tools in pluma, "pythonconsole", for xed but it depends on the bottom panel. I would tell it to use another pane but the bottom seems to be the most logical place. ;)
Cheers!

Xed does not remember window size or position

as the title states: Xed does not remember window size or position, it resets to the primary diaplay and default size every time it is closed and opened

edit1: I was able to overcome the dimension issue by forcing the correct dimensions in xed.ini, although it should not need to be fixed in this manner.

Underscores disappear when cursor travels past line containing them

This is a weird one, will see if I can explain it. I can't capture a screenshot of it, but I can reliably reproduce it.

Environment

  • Linux Mint 18 Sarah with Cinnamon
  • 4.4.0-21 Linux kernel
  • Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro
  • Integrated Intel graphics adapter
  • HiDPI display (3200x1800) with User interface scaling set to Auto
  • xed 1.0.6

Problem

Opened a C source file (tagreader_c.c from TagLib's example programs). There are lines like:

TagLib_File *file;
TagLib_Tag *tag;

When I cursor past them going "down," they appear to change to (render as):

TagLib File *file;
TagLib Tag *tag;

When I cursor back "up" past them, the underscores reappear. It is _very_ reproducible. Yet when I take a screenshot of the window with the underscores missing, they show up in the screenshot.

Strange, yes?

accessibility request: Zooming fonts with ctrl+

We should be able to zoom the fonts with ctrl+
like in many other programs
(firefox, mate-terminal, konsole, kate etc...)

This is important, some of us have eyesight issues.
It's very nice to easily change the zooooom.

Right now we need to click click click
edit>preferences>fonts&colors>editor font> B[
I'm not saying that the current feature is no good,
just saying that it can become even better :D

Initiative from gedit developers to make the code more re-usable

Not an issue, just an information. I'm a gedit and GtkSourceView developer.

You should be aware of these initiatives:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Gedit/ReusableCode
https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GtkSourceView/MdiFramework

And I've started this project recently:
https://github.com/swilmet/gtef

For what is worth, I don't like the new gedit UI with the headerbar, I prefer a traditional menubar and toolbar. But the gedit core (without the plugins) still contains ~40k lines of code. Ideally most of that code should be shared with a library, and the application would just need to glue things up together.

Blank line at end-of-file not displayed

When opening a text file, xed is not displaying the ending \x0D\x0A (blank line at the end of the file). The visible cursor cannot be 'pushed' past the end of the last populated line. If I add an end-of-line at the end-of-file, the file winds up with 2 blank lines at the end-of-file.

Please display the entire file as it exists. Don't "beautify" it.

Black lines at the bottom of a file after refreshing document

I observed the black rectangle a few times in the past.
Now I can reproduce it a lot.
bildschirmfoto vom 2016-12-13 11-31-57

Open the file ~/.local/share/recentyl-used.xbel
When you minimize and maximize the file, you get a red bar with the option to Reload.
After reloading, scroll to the bottom. The black rectangle at the bottom should appear.

Feature Request: Bookmarks option in the File browser pane

Hi,
It would be nice if there was a possibility that under the File option in the Side Pane browser plug-in, add arbitrary bookmarks folder. This would quickly locate the desired files, instead of navigating step by step through the file system.

In Sublime Text, there is a good example plugin entitled Folder, where this problem is solved smart.
It is interesting that when you use the File>Open dialog, Xed recognizes Bookmark option from the Caja.

I apologize if I'm looking for something that may already exist, the requirements relating to Xed ver. 1.2.2, LMDE2, with Mate at my computer.

Regards to all

Add Notepad as Keyword

Can we have notepad added to list of keywords to make it appear on Menu search?

Notepad is really a generic phrase so I presume it won't lead to any patent or proprietary issues. πŸ˜‰

Keywords=text;editor;tabs;highlighting;code;multiple;files;pluggable;

Keywords=text;editor;tabs;highlighting;code;multiple;files;pluggable;notepad;

New style tabs for Xed Preferences window.

The Xed Preferences window uses old style tabs, whereas Nemo's Preferences and Properties windows, as well as System Settings sections use new style tabs which are more elegant. It would be nice to have the new style tabs for Xed Preferences window as well.

Thank you.

xed's tabs look strange when using the clearlooks-phoenix theme

OS: Linux Mint 18 MATE Edition (64 bit)
Hardware: Thinkpad X240 (1366x768)
GTK Theme: Clearlooks-Phoenix (installed from apt-get)
Application: xed, synaptic

I've always been using the clearlooks gtk theme since ubuntu 10.04. Now ubuntu 10.04 is not supported any more, so I have to switch to MATE.

The clearlooks-phoenix theme looks perfect in Linux Mint 17.2 MATE edition, but I find that something looks strange after I upgrade to Linux Mint 18.

I will list two details here:

  • The xed's tab looks strange (compared with pluma in 17.2)
  • Synaptic's download window looks strange (when I hover on one row, the progress bar on the left looks strange)

I'm not pretty sure whether the problem is with the gtk theme or related applications. Anyhow, hope these problems can be fixed.

B.T.W.

It would be great if a clearlooks-like theme is included and tested by default when Linux Mint 18 is installed.

Segfault when removing color scheme

With xed 1.0.6 on Linux Mint 18, I'm able to consistently get a segfault when removing a color scheme.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Preferences dialog and navigate to Fonts & Colors tab
  2. Add a new color scheme
  3. Select a color scheme different than the one just added
  4. Select the color scheme that was just added
  5. Click remove

Here's a backtrace:
