piet-metal's Introduction

piet-metal

This repository is currently an experiment in using GPU compute to implement the piet 2D graphics API. In its initial stages it is an Objective-C macOS application, to make it easier to use Xcode tools. When it becomes more functional, Rust bindings will be added, with the Objective-C code for the Metal bindings built from the Rust library's build.rs.

Following along

I'm discussing the design and my findings in the #druid stream on xi Zulip. I've also creates a notes document.

piet-metal's Issues

Weird Artifacts

Hey! you might already know about this, but I thought I'd still post it just it case it might be helpful. I'm running piet-metal on a 2016 MBP with a Radeon Pro 450. It works, but the SVG tiger has a lot of artefacts:

I thought it might be integrated chip so I used gfx-status to enforce the discrete GPU and ran it again. That didn't change it though as piet properly automatically uses the discrete device.

Is this expected behaviour? Can I submit any other system info to help out? Great project, looking forward to where this is going!

Profiling output

It would be useful to output some numbers for CPU time, GPU time, and total time per frame. That would ease up the comparison to pathfinder. cc @nical
