alexandria-extension's Introduction

Alexandria

Alexandria is a in-browser PDF viewer for academic papers. Its primary goal is to make papers easier to digest. It does so by providing simple but effective features.

Features

Alexandria is aware of the paper you read. It parses its references and adds links to a citation's Google Scholar entry.

It also changes the tab's title, so that papers are easily destinguishable.

Figures can be clicked on to make the float over the article.

Alexandria also supports dark mode.

Roadmap

Check out the issues for an in-depth roadmap. The most notable features include:

  • improved figure support (show figures when hovering over Fig. 1a, make the floatable, etc.)
  • custom search engine (e.g. Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar etc.)

alexandria-extension's Issues

Tooltips

  • highlight the title of the reference
  • parse links → refer to these upon click
  • missing white space between words
  • unnecessary hyphen between words
  • improve tooltip location (or add padding)

Prevent native plugin from loading

This requires the body to get replaced before loading. Alternatively, we can also hide everything and alter the DOM once everything is loaded.

Add links

I think this needs to be implemented using invisible HTML buttons.
Add internal/external links to:

  • title
  • authors → get list from crossref
  • references
  • figures

Text Search

  • Searching text on pages that are not in the cache rn does not work
  • Text with custom links appears twice as a search result

Add key shortcuts

  • cmd + 0 => zoom to 100%
  • cmd + 9 => zoom to fit width
  • cmd + 8 => zoom to fit page
