Hi,
I addapted your code to read XBM files from SD (ESP32 TTGO-T8 v1.7).
I like to add this functionality as an enhancement to my tty2oled MiSTer Add-On but I don't got the last XBM Byte read correctly.

I addeded another condition for the transfer of xbm into imagebits to solve this.

I added:
const char curly = 125; // "}"
...
and modified this
else if (next == comma) {
into this
else if ((next == comma) || (next == curly)) {

After this modification I was also able to get rid of these two lines outside the while loop:

imageBits[pos++] = (int) strtol(xbm.c_str(), NULL, 16); //turn the string into a character
imageBits[pos]=0;
