Scaling not yet clearly defined in the NMEA protocol

Max Betz wrote:

  • The scaling is not yet clearly defined in the NMEA protocol. Do my assumptions fit here?
    Ballast (1.00 - 1.60) <= would it make sense to simply transfer a value in KG here? What is the appropriate value range here (i.e. maximum ballast)?
  • Bugs in % (0 - 30) <= In XCSOAR / Opensoar I find a setting between 0 ... 50 %. (0 == clean, 50% wet surface "double sink rate") Which value range/scaling do you recommend here?
  • Crew weight is still missing I think. Would 0 ... 300kg fit?
  • Switching between climb and pre-flight mode? Our front end can currently be switched manually or use the information from the sensor. Should this be coupled with XCSOAR?

CAN bus protocol: Water ballast

The water ballast should be specified in the CAN bus protocol as a multiple of the "dry weight" so that it can be passed on from the sensor box to the XCSoar / OpenSoar via NMEA.

NMEA intervals

NMEA intervals and :
we should implement different intervals. Does the assignment fit:

  • 1x / second: GGA, RMC data set, battery voltage (PLARB), air density (PLARD)
  • 4x / second: Wind, Heading, Variometer, AHRS (PLARV, PLARW, PLARA, HCHDT)

Support feeding through pilot events to FLARM or other IGC loggers.

In competitions pilots need to be able to set a "Pilot Event Marker" and record it using their IGC-logger. If the logger is a Power-FLARM, a NMEA-Sequence "$PFLAI,PILOTEVENT*..." shall to be sent to it.

If such an event is declared using a XCsoar frontend, the event shall be published (also via CAN bus) and fed to any wired FLARM device.

The Vario-Display shall also be enabled to trigger such an event.
