Work-around;
$ GOOS=linux go build -ldflags "-extldflags '-static -pthread' -X main.version=$(date +%F:%T)" ./cmd/kpng
# (produces a ton of warnings but a working statically linked kpng)

per lars, this workaround works - i guess we just now need a Makefile that encodes this vs the standard kpng compilation target...

I've added Dockerifle.static that builds a static image. Once built, binaries can be extracted from it ie like that:
docker build -t kpng-static -f Dockerfile.static .
docker create --name kpng-static kpng-static
docker cp kpng-static:/bin/. dist/static/
kpng static is now there:
$ file dist/static/kpng
dist/static/kpng: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, Go BuildID=9YcFUvPkTy35sefgnmgq/AEBde1HmneUDGNDWHlAc/k4k2G3zVxX8zVBXZnEmp/Ta8KAS6wxkCMpJPedTh2, not stripped
from kpng.
