I would like to discuss your experience with ESP8266 and PCB antenna. I see you tried it with ESP8266.v05a but switched to a wire antenna with ESP8266.v05f. I have a prototype clock with a PCB antenna from OSHPark, and everything works except WiFi. I switched to a quality RF coupling capacitor, and it still doesn't work. I see many designs use a row of tiny vias at the edge of the ground planes near the antenna, and I haven't done that. I copied most of the design from SparkFun Thing, but I had to use a smaller antenna. I'm out of ideas to debug this. Maybe just build a second prototype to see if it's a bad chip.
