As a first step, read through the documentation. What is going to end up being installed (it is not just mattermost). Are there alternatives?

There's the mattermost server itself, but it talks to a database and it usually sits behind a web server that acts as a reverse proxy.

When you've brought up Mattermost using the installation instructions, look at the resources that the installation has configured on your system. Where are the configuration files stored? Which step of the installation created or modified those files?

Identify the processes that mattermost relies on on your system. You can start with "ps"; depending on the installation, other tools will be useful .

Of course we can change these as we go along, but it's good to be aware of these from the start.
