systemd scope is irrelevant. Failing to move it into a new scope is
harmless and just means the OOM killer will probably kill kitty too if
some program running inside it uses too much memory, which was anyway
the case when no attempt was made to use systemd scopes.
As for your issue, kitty windows will auto close when the program
running inside them closes. I suggest instead of kitty -1 vim use
kitty -1 sh -c "vim; printf 'vim quit'; read"
which will not close when vim closes. And if vim is crashing you might
get something useful leftover in the window.

I actually want kitty to auto-close when Vim quits (in the workflow context that led me to observe the vanishing kitty windows).
But you're right, it didn't occur to me that perhaps Vim is the culprit here.
