A fix for your ViewPagerAdapter issue that sidesteps the caching problem is to create your collection of fragments ahead of time instead of creating a new fragment at the time getItem() is called. Create a collection (such as an ArrayList) and have it hold all the fragments for the books in the book list (ArrayList).
This will allow the FragmentStatePagerAdapter to properly identify the right fragments when the set of fragments is reset. An example is below:

bookFragments.clear(); // Empty the array list containing the collection of fragments
for (Book book : books) {
bookFragments.add(BookFragment.newInstance(book)); // Populate
