2014-02-18-uts's Introduction

I am a research associate professor at UC Berkeley's Institute for Data Science. I'm passionate about making science more open and research software more visible. In 2011, I co-founded the rOpenSci project and served as its founding director through 2024. I am an advisor for The US Research Software Sustainability Institute, The UK Software Sustainability Institute (SSI), and an advisor to Open Journals. Lately, you can find me on BlueSky.

2014-02-18-uts's Issues

Find helpers for bootcamp, ideally women

Have the following candidates:

  • Kerensa Mcelroy from CSIRO. Experience with R, shell, C, python, but not git. coming from Canberra so has asked i we can cover $100 travel expenses
  • Tim Churches: epidemiology, affiliated with UTS, experience with R, git, shell, visualisation
  • Diego Barneche: PHD student at Macquarie University. Can teach or tutor R, shell, git
  • Court Turing: contacted Karthik via twitter.

I suggest we say yes to all four and find a way to pay for Kerensa's travel (Aaron is this possible at your end?). Good to have Tim involved as he is hoping to run similar bootcamps for health researchers so will benefit from experience.

Logistics

For the host

@koadman

  • Make sure the room has enough outlets for everyone to use.
  • Make sure the room has wifi (or set in motion whatever we need to do to make that happen)
  • Set up eventbrite (possibly with a private code) and set limit to total spots - reserved spots.
(note, it looks like eventbrite registration can easily be included into the gh-pages template we have. Should I find out more from Amy Brown?)

For instructors (to do 7-10 days before bootcamp)

  • Once all 40 (or total limit) is reached, send out installation instructions 1 wk before (any earlier is too soon).
  • Mostly make sure students have RStudio, latest R, and running has_devel() returns TRUE (means devtools, RTools, and Linux equivalent are properly installed). There are some Mavericks specific instructions we need to include
  • Set up survey to find out what the target audience is most keen on learning + past experience w/ various tools. See old example here.

For @dfalster and @richfitz

  • Find two helpers. Preferably women coders in the Sydney area.

Set timing of coffee & lunch breaks

I am arranging morning & evening coffee service and catered lunch for attendees and need to communicate the desired timing with the caterers. Instructors, any idea what the schedule will look like? Would be preferable to tell them no later than Thursday if possible.
