Hi guys. Awesome project! I read somewhere there was an open 10k res DEM. Do you happen to have this available too?
I am considering using this data in an example for an Rmarkdown workflow. The example demonstrates how colleagues (mostly state government employees) could generate automated draft word documents for their water quality monitoring reports. So, they just update their monitoring points and data, and run the Rmarkdown code to create new graphs and maps with the updated data and output a word document. Instead of using a state geometric outline, I think it would be fun to use Middle Earth, and pretend the cities are monitoring points. Would this be ok? Thanks!
Hi, I would like to use your data (a) for fun and (b) to explore some R spatial plotting techniques.
Thanks!
When you overlay Middle-earth data over the real world, it shows up in Africa near 0°N 0°W. Moreover, the map seem to be shrunk exactly by about half. Distances mentioned in texts and scale-bars on maps confirm this as well.
It would be nice to reposition/reproject it so it matches with Europe better while keeping the shape of the map intact.
There are several hints from Tolkien and there have been various attempts to interpret them. Some resources to start:
Note: I have no idea how to fix this, but I thought we should at least acknowledge the problem.
Hi all,
I was hoping to use these files for a ggplot workshop.
best,
Josh Allen
We are a small business building 3d wooden maps. On TikTok, one of our most requested maps was Middle Earth!
If interested, please check it out - https://www.tiktok.com/@lindentreedesigns/video/6987482968273063174
We would love to bring such a beauty to life and was wondering how to contact to purchase a commercial license.
Thanks and amazing work to the contributors!
Would love to send you all a wooden map of your amazing work
Hello,
I'd like to use the DEM for playing around with some different visualizations, and general fun.
Thanks,
Richard
Hi,
I am getting my head around ArcGIS Pro. My brother has asked me to make a map of Middle Earth. My work will go on social media pages and into my portfolio.
Can I please use your data?
Cheers,
Harry
I'm considering using this data to demonstrate working with shapefiles in R statistical software. Would you be amenable to this? I think it would make for a fun example for my students.
Thanks!
Hi,
I'm a manager in GIS/AI software company (http://www.wizipisi.pl/en/). Me and some of my colleagues are heavily into Tolkien's world and we had the idea to collect available vector data + raster data + dbpedia + wikidata, perform some GIS/NLP/Graph analyses and see if we can extract some cool infomration (new facts, relations etc.) and then show it on the maps. Our goal is simply to have fun, but we also want to share it in the social media (linkedin/facebook etc.) from time to time, to share our company culture. Can we use the data you've created for these purposes? All of the credits will of course be included and we can share the results of our analyses here.
Good Afternoon,
I am a student and was wondering if I could request permission to use your ME-GIS data for my final project? I would of course credit you appropriately.
Thank you for your time.
Hello dear friend,
I am a master student of applied data science program in TED University. I have a term project for statistical inference and my aim is to build a Middle Earth map as a dashboard in R. I would like to present the story line in that map. Therefore, I would like to use your dataset. Can I get your dataset for this purpose? If you like I would share it with you :)
Thank you for your interest!
Happy Coding.
Hi,
Truly great work on those GIS data! I would like to use them for learning purposes, concerning GIS data and leaflet.js. My goal is to just create an interactive Middle-Earth map. Obviously for non-commercial usage.
I have a technical question. Just to remind you, I have no experience with spatial data. I've loaded the whole project to QGIS, and it showed that EPSG:32631
is used for those data as an SPS/CRS. So, I used Proj4Leaflet to use a custom coordinate system. I've been able to render some GIS data (e.g Cities
) using Leaflet in browser, but the problem is that they are placed in a completely wrong position. The same with Coastlines
. So my conclusion is that I did something wrong with the coordinate system.
Maybe I use incorrect SRS? Which one should be used with those GIS data?
Hello,
If the DEM is available, I'd like to use the data to create some flood maps of the Middle Earth (for fun and marketing purpose), would that be ok?
Happy to share the results with you if interested.
Arnaud
Hi,
I would make an task for my trainees where they must find the position of the one ring. Can I use your data for this task?
Hi, I prepare GIS training on GeoMedia Professional on UDEMY. Can I use LOTR data to my course? I'm going to use the data to show functionality GeoMedia like data connection, data symbolization, spatial queries and analysis etc.
For my school, I need to create a project (OOP). I want to make a "Google Maps for Middle Earth". Of course, it will not be available to the public.
Should be Bindbole (with an "o") instead of Bindbale (with an "a"). This is the original (and correct) spelling.
Thanks for all this! I have plans to attempt making a "fellowship flyby" project using bokeh (https://bokeh.org/ ), akin to strava's flyby feature ( see https://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/#117975259?c=9q8yer73&z=C&t=1J5pF9&a=2ygIBwA2CAc2MQgH ).
I'll use these shapefiles for basemapping. I'll use Fonstad's Atlas of Middle Earth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Atlas_of_Middle-earth) to manufacture x-y-time data for each fellowship member, and then use your dem and those paths to generate elevation profiles. Will probably need to manufacture gandalf's ascent of the endless stair but other than that should be able to be done programmatically.
Asking for permission to use this stuff!
Hi there! I'm a GIS instructor, and would love to use some of this data in a lab activity. May I?
Hi,
I am thinking about using this great dataset for education series using QGIS - similarly to:
https://blog.gvsig.org/2017/07/12/learning-gis-with-game-of-thrones-free-book/
Would be on my web or blog, expect making all the additional files publicly available - or can commit them here.
What do you think about it?
Finally, one more question. I heard about the DEM. I have no problem to create it - did you use only the contours as input for the interpolation or did you also have some additional height data?
thanks
